Great Score for the Homestead

We have a few areas that need fill dirt put in them. It is about 10 dumptruck loads we need. They are building a 4 lane in front of our house. My wifes best friends boyfriend works for the company doing the work.

He said they have fill they need to get rid of. Clean fill! Yeah Baby.... They have to truck it 30 miles to get rid of it. Well now I informed him I have no problem helping them save fuel by dumping some of it on our homestead. He said he would even bring the machinery over to spread it out where it needs to be..

Things are definitely looking up.

Good rich clean fill is valuable. Kids are building a new house and have needed a lot of fill. They are paying $35 per truck load plus gasoline plus some additional hauling expense, perhaps for driver.

Have placed 60 loads and are figuring on 20 more. Will still be much cheaper than a different building lot and it is in a better location.

AJ,

Sounds good. May as well get some extra and pile it up for future projects.

Not so lucky getting a 4 lane highway built in front?

Actually RF, the Highway is ok with us. We actually came out with more property because of it. It is also farther from the house by about 10 yards. The old road was dangerous and used to land wrecked vehicles in our yard. Now it is almost impossible for them to end up even close.

That is great, we had the same thing here a few years ago when the county was digging ditches and my Uncle ran out to the road and stopped a dump truck driver and asked for the fill dirt which they were more than happy to dump and also told them to dump at my place once he got his fill.

I might be leary of taking soil that comes off of a road right of way. I believe I read somewhere sometime or other, that back when cars used leaded gas, the nearby soil on roadways got saturated with the lead and other nasty compounds. Might not be true, I don't know.

If it were 'good' topsoil, can't imagine em having to haul it so far.

But if you have some holes need filling, sure beats buying some dirt or fill...

The soil has come from ground that was at least 100 yards from the old roadbed. This was all pastureland and woodlands so it might be safe to assume that it is not contaminated with lead. Now maybe chemicals used in farming....just maybe!

Being serious, thanks for enlightening me. I didn't think of the possible lead or other contamination!
