New to Homesteading and a few Q??

Hello to all old and new homesteaders..I'm a 37 yr old single lady who's tired of living in the rat race and having the BG telling me what I can and can't do with my life and freedom..
I am living in the midwest and would like to look for some land in the east part of Tennessee.
my Q's are
what area should I look at that will let me enjoy a homesteading life?
How do I find out what area are livestock friendly with out alot of traveling?
Well I can't think of anything else but if I do Ill ask..
Thanks

Can't answer your questions, AutumnWolf, as I'm not familiar with the area you're interested in. However, I'd like to welcome you to Homesteading Today. Lots of good folks here with eons of experience, and willingness to share.

We live in E. Tn, and once you get away from the city (Knoxville, in our case), just about any area is "livestock friendly." Much of the land is so hilly that row crop farming is nigh on impossible, so many people keep cattle to keep their land cleared off. Much of E. Tn is rural and lends itself to homesteading because folks here still remember how to can & garden & kill a chicken & help out a neighbor.

ditto to what Joy said. I'm just outside of the Crossville, TN area but I'm originally from upper northeast TN around Bristol & Johnson City. If you get out of the bigger cities and the small towns, you'll find a lot of farm land... just be aware that lot of the land has been in the families for generations and you may have issues finding pasture land that's for sale in certain areas.... sure there is some but you don't want to buy it sight unseen.

You'll find a varying degree of areas as well as the livestock that is kept, from sheep, goats, horses, cattle, to llamas (yes llamas), to pigs, chickens, and rabbits.... it just depends on what the farmer has a hankering to raise just like other area around the country.

East TN is a beautiful place with a lot of downhome, country folks, but you'll also find many "good ol' boys" still stomping around.

Welcome to the forum. Have you excluded all other areas? If you have an independent source of income, or a very salable skillset(i. e. medical) there's lots available here in Western Michigan. Pick a town and look at the MLS realtor ads. Good luck.

I'm in E TN. Plenty of places to have livestock around here. Land is poor and rocky but few rules or regulations. We're the meth capital and the Mexican immigrant capital, research Morristown,TN about Mexicans. Schools are very low ranking and it shows up in the general population. We're in a very strong section of the Bible belt so be prepared for that. Land is getting very expensive because of the extension of I-26 and everyone escaping the NE and Florida. Taxes are still low but on the rise, services reflect the taxes.

Welcome. I have learned and enjoy this sight so much. We have property in Middle Tn.
North of Huntsville-south of Nashville. Decent prices on land yet..schools are good and population pretty stable. Jobs are not plentiful but some. Love the area and the people.
When we bought we excluded E. Tn as too much tourist area in some areas and higher concentration of population. Meth too but seems to be a big issue getting rid of it.
