H Farmall pto question

Bought a 48 H Farmall with a over rideing pto shaft on the pto. I want to take it off, but cant. It has one set screw on one side, and a grease zerk opposite 1/2 way round. How can I get it off the pto shaft. tried hammer. didnt work

It is probity worn on the inside or must have rust in it or both. Take the screw out squirt penetrating oil in their and at the back let it set for about 2 hours and turn it back wards at the back end and see if it will come of then. Another way is to use two hammers and beat on the back end end to see of the rust will come loose and then turn it back wards with a pipe wrench. You must have it in gear so that the motor will hold the shaft. Do not beat the back end so bad that it will distort it enough to keep it from coming off.

Maybe you need to hook something up to it and use it for a short time, that might loosen it, try starting and stopping a mower or whatever you hook up several times then try again.....

Thanks for the replys.

I dont think its rusty, course, u never know, but its got oil/grease comeing out in front of the over ride onto the pto shaft. It moves back and forth a tiny bit with a slotch slotch kinda sound, more like there being grease in there than rust, Im probably going to add an extension to my drawbar which will work in this instance, BUT I doubt if my IHC sickle mower will work with it on.

Before you beating on the PTO with a hammer

You might want to take off both the set screw and zerk, find a long punch the diameter of the hole through the overrunning clutch and PTO shaft - run the punch through the hole to be sure you dont have a cold rolled pin holding the the overrunning clutch on the PTO shaft. IF there is one in there and you go banging on the clutch without removing the pin, you will wind up busting something. Just a thought and suggestion.

If your still having problems go over to YTMAG.COM to the IHC/Farmall board there for some great assistance.

Let us know how it turns out.

Red Dog Farms is right on. There is a pin in the over running clutch. Take out the zerk fitting and the set screw and push the pin out.

Yup - they have a roll pin inside through the hole, remove both the 'set screw' which is just a cap, and the zerk, and pound the roll pin out.

This might sound easier than it will be, if it's been on a while those roll pins can wear or sorta-shear a lot & want to hang up bad.

Be real careful if you will try a brush hog on a non-live pto tractor without the ORC. It will want to move forward many feet before it stops, can get yourself in trouble that way.

Also many H tractors came with the skiny pto shaft; your ORC might also be a converter style, that up-sizes the old skiny pto shaft to a modern regular size......
