When we moved to WY we were warned to be very careful not to trespass because landowners tend to shoot first and ask questions later! It was a bit scary because "county" roads were dirt with cattle guards & gates so how do you tell private ranch roads from county roads?

And being a "native" of that area myself, it's even more amusing in some ways, with the private road vs public road thing.

Our ranch was 3 miles off the gravelled county road and there was only one more ranch on up the road from us. It was in the hills, up a small creek, but there was one place you could see vehicles coming about a mile down the road. I can remember one of my parents or grandparents seeing dust on the road in the summer and waiting until they could see whoever it was coming around that bend ... they'd see it and say "Oh, that's just "xxxx", must be going on up to see Charlie" ... or "Hmm ... don't recognize that outfit, wonder who they're looking for?"
