We got our first home grown chicken egg today!

I'm so excited I just had to share this with you all. My wife went to check on our chickens this evening and came back with our first ever home grown chicken egg!

This is our first foray into homesteading type activities and into any sort of farm animals too. It has been fascinating raising them from chicks and now finally starting to enjoy the fruits of our labors. We cooked it right up and it tasted great, so much more flavorful than the store egg we compared it to. The yolk was nice and golden too, just like everyone on the chicken forum said it would be.

I'm so happy that I found this website when I did. A few years back I would have laughed at you if you said I'd soon have 20 acres in the country and 18 chickens in a coop. Anyway, I hope this encourages anyone on here who needs a little boost into homesteading... it's great!

Here's some pics, there are more on my blog (link in signature).

Agree 100 %
No other Egg can compare to a home raised, free ranged Chicken Egg.

Oh it cost well over $100 in feed alone not even taking into account all the other supplies, building the coop, fencing etc. But everyone knows it's expensive to get setup for any new animal. When they all get to laying I will have enough eggs to sell some which hopefully will offset at least the continuing feed costs. If it breaks even I'll be thrilled, free homegrown eggs is what I'm after.

Well I think they could care less about the automatic door itself, but it's making ME very happy not to have to go out early in the morning before work or right after it gets dark to open/close the door. I'm sure they do like being outside all day though!

We sell around 8 - 10 dozen a week at $1.50 EA.
Our hens pay for their keep and also the feed for the Goats, plus, we get great tasting eggs that are more nutritional than store bought eggs, plus, we have very little bugs around the house
