Woodpile pics & a math problem

Okay, here is what I did:

Woodpile pics & a math problem - Homesteading Questions

With my own womanly strength and several coolish days, became this:

Woodpile pics & a math problem - Homesteading Questions

Now the question: How many cords is it?

This pile measures 5'x7'x11'.

*WARNING* reposted pic from CF.
(& because I am 'still' so excited...)

I am almost looking forward to cooler weather for once.

If we assume a stacked cord of firewood is 4' x 4' x 8', it would have a volume of 128 square feet.

Your pile is 385 square feet. 385 / 128 = 3 full cords.

Since your pile has so little air space in it, it is probably more equivalent to 4 full cords of firewood.

What kind of wood is it?

Thanks Cabin Fever! It is wet fresh oak.

It IS stacked pretty tight, though I left a few inches behind the pile and put the very biggest pieces on the bottom. There is NO bark on it either. It will dry out just fine though, I know from experience.

I always wonder when they dump the trailer in the yard, how many cords it will work out to. This is the first year I bothered to measure it.

Now I need a new pair of work gloves, & some new boots.

WIHH, my DH has told me pretty much the same thing...

The guy I buy this wood from always makes sure to put a nice chopping block in the load for me.

You can see that lastyear's stump is still functional, and still heavy!

This site has some good info:

[QUOTE=gone-a-milkin;3944276]
Now the question: How many cords is it?

A cord is 4'x4'x8' = 128 sq.'

This pile measures 5'x7'x11'.

=385 sq.'

385/128 = 3.0078125 cords

That's more wood than you can use before it rots in MO.
To prevent that, bring some to WI and we'll burn it before it rots.

Your firewood stacking is gorgeous and ingenious!

Well somebody needs to do the math. I presume doing math tricks keeps him from having to stack wood?

So far we have two math majors who have come up with the same incorrect answers, I am now wondering which one will notice and correct it first.

.............Actually , I wouldn't mind having some exterior walls on a cabin that resembled your wood pile ! I don't know how I'd "chink" in the spaces but it sure would look kinda unique ! , fordy

Here's another angle.

Woodpile pics & a math problem - Homesteading Questions

There is that little part above the wheelbarrow, which is the smallest of broken chunks, that is about 3 feet deep in that area. The rest is blocks of wood.

As you can see, OJ Rallye, it is under roof. So, I dont think it will rot out before I can burn it.

YH, are you saying these guys are giving me some BAD MATH?

Can't believe you would make this mistake all on your own. I think WIHH must have been distracting you. Was she dancing around in something sexy?

Volume would be cubic feet.

Ouch!

Just that they both said square feet, rather than cubic feet.

NASA has lost Mars probes by using Metric and Imperial measurements at the same time.
This is minor

Last time I complimented a woman on how well she was stacked or that she had a nice axe I was nearly smacked upside the head.

I'll stick with nice pile of firewood, good job piling it, and great lookin stove.

Is that wooden box on top of the pile an old case for bottle beer?? If it is, take good care of it.
