Rehabbing a woodstove...

Today we picked up a Fisher Baby Bear... yeah! But it needs some love.
-It has rust on the outside. Circle-y spotted rust.
What is the best way to lovingly take it off.. naval jelly and steel wool??
-Some of the fire bricks are in chunks. Still in place, but not for long.
How best to replace them? It is the one against the very back of the firebox..of course.
-Which high temp. paint is the best and is there anything I should do after I de-rust and before I paint?

Anything else you can think of to tell me would be appreciated too. I may not know enough to ask.

I am so glad to relegate the Vogelzang to the shop! Heap of junk!

Congratulations on pitching that old wood hog!

I hope you will be able to find parts for your Fisher. We looked at buying a used one too (mama bear), but found absolutely NO ONE had parts for them. I guess since they stopped making them in the '80s.

Maybe somebody here will have the hookup for you.

Is your stove already painted? I guess I have never seen one that was painted.

If it was me I would just black it. It is also called 'stove polish'. It is not quite as nasty fumey as that 1200* paint.

Good luck!

The "best " way to get rust off would be to have it sandblasted.
Other than that. a wire brush on a drill. and some FINE sandpaper will make it go a lot faster.
Stove polish (Stove Black) will be better than paint.
You can buy firebrick at most any building supply store, IF it's not an odd size.

I had a Grandpa Bear back in the 80's, but I cant remember if the bricks were standard or thinner

Funny, I got much more fuming off of polish than the paint...
