leatherworking tools/supplies

I have lost a large amount of weight that will be staying off and have dozens of belts that are nearly new but way too long, some as much as 15 inches. I'd like to redo these nicely to wear them. What is a good source of leatherworking tools? we don't have a leather/shoe repair shop nearby. I've come up some uses for the leftover tails but could they be made into doggie treats somehow? thanks in advance.

Tandy Leather Factory has a website & catalog. They stock a pretty complete line of leather & leather working tools.

Yes, Tandy.

Don't use the leftovers for doggie toy and treats. Leathers are cured with chemicals nowdays. You could make your dog quite sick.
Other then that Tandy is about the best out there. They have a catalog and several stores located around the country.

Go to your nearest Tack store that sells horse stuff, get a leather punch. Some come with a wheel for different size holes. That'll do for the holes.

You can cut leather with a knife, by continually scoring it. Sand the edges and dye them.

If you're going to tool leather, you need to see what's been done to the belt first. Dye, finish, etc. Leather tooling works well after the leather is dampened first.

as previously said, Do NOT give belt ends to dogs.

I agree, try Tandy for leather working tools and supplies. Check and see if they have a local store in your area. They have some really excellent sales each month, we were just there on Saturday and bought a few tools at 50% off the regular price.

The local stores also have some pretty good discount items. They close out discontinued items at 75% off... I bought some ladies buckle sets for $4 and $4.50 that normally sell for $25 and $30 each. I'm going to use them to make my 3 girls each a belt for Christmas.

Tandy and Weaver (and other leather tool sellers) carry strap end punches for different width of strap. Makes a nice clean finished end on a strap. There's a few different shapes of punch. I bought the largest one I could find (big enough to do a 2" wide strap) and then just center it carefully for smaller sizes of strap. I think I paid $40 for mine. I use it all the time, though. Both for my own stuff and for stuff I make and sell.

My wife over estimated the length of a gift belt; I took it back to the vendor & he trimmed it. He used a magic marker to 'dye' the small cut edge...
