measuring blackberries

If I put them in one gallon zip-lock bags ,how thick should I make them, in order to be considered a gallon?

Fill a bag with a gallon of water and go by how that looks.

If I remember correctly, there are 2 cups in a pint, 2 pints to a quart (4 cups), and 4 quarts to a gallon (16 cups)? So I'm thinking if you measure out 16 cups, that would be a gallon? I may not be remembering this correctly, but you can probably do a search to confirm how many cups are in a gallon...

I would use a gallon measure and then pour them into the bag. Or like lickcreek says.....

water won't measure the same as berries..but i would go with the cups..thing..also you can freeze the berries on a tray ..cookie sheet..and then pour them into the bags..and they will stay looser so you can take out part of a bag

Do it like Ronbre suggested. Freeze them first. Otherwise you'll have a big frozen gob of mashed blackberries. <>UNK

I thought a gallon of water in a bag would take up the same space as a gallon of berries in a bag. My bad. I use quart bags myself for that kind of stuff but I'm only cooking for two.

Gallon is a liquid measure. Berries are a solid and should be measured either by weight or by volume

I say fill up the bag so that you can still close it easily without squishing the berries. That's your gallon.

And freeze them first otherwise you'll have...oh. Unk said that

Well----what I do when I want to fill a large bag is place it inside of a one gallon can to hold it upright and stable with the top folded over the can edge to keep it clean. Filled to the top edge of the can and you would have one gallon.

If you do such, make sure your can has no sharp projection where the can lid was removed.
