What to do with.......
a 40 pound container of dog food that is full of dead flies? I sure don't want to feed it to the dogs and I don't think the chickens will eat it....any ideas? Should I throw it away, or bury it or could I try to give it to someone with some other kind of animal, like pigs?

You could feed it gradually to chickens or dig it into the compost.

I think the pieces are too big for them, they still seem little to me. I will try a few pieces and see how it goes!

The chickens will love it. I'd limit it only because of the protein

And if the pieces are too big you can jump up and down on the bag to break them up or go at it with a hammer.
Flies... yummy!!!

What killed the flies?
Not sure if I would feed it to any of my animals if they were poisoned.

If the feed is still good, - like Kmac15 said, what killed the flies? - you can put a scoop of it into a dish of water, put it out where the chickens can get to it, then step back. We get very dry, hard bread for free that I put into water in a 5 gallon bucket at a time, and if I don't cover it, it will be gone by the time I go back for evening feeding. The ducks love playing in the water with their food. The chickens fight over it. My pig loves it too. So if you can soften the feed up, they'll eat it. Chickens will eat anything, including each other.

The flies are my fault. Nothing poisoned them! We bought the dog food and dumped it in the container. Fed it for about three days. Then yesterday I noticed some spots in the bowl. Looked closer and saw dead flies and just thought the kids must be killing them over the bowl (there are tons of flies this year!)....but got suspicious and checked the plastic container and there are lots of dead flies. I had seen a lot in the garage but didn't think about it because we have so many out back around the rabbits. I guess they were getting in the container and then couldn't get out. So now there are tons of dead ones in the food.
Now that I have typed that.....EEEEWWWWWW!

If I was sure it was not poisoned I would feed it gradually to the chickens but, I would not compost it because dog food is full of grease. That is not good for compost and will attract rodents.

Assuming this is dry dogfood, it would make great fish food.
My brother in law used to toss handfuls of dog food into his pond every morning on his way to work. The fish got used to eating there at the same time every day. Whenever he wanted fresh fish he would toss some dog food in, cast a line in, and within a few minutes have all the fish he wanted.'
Tight lines,

I gave the chickens about half a cup of it- we only have 5 chickens, and they seemed to like it. I hate to toss it because it was $30! LOL Right now that is a lot of $$ to us since dh isn't working so I will feed it gradually to the chickies.
And the dogs are thrilled because I have no money for more dog food so they are eating people food!
At least the critters are happy!

Your dogs must be pickier than mine. They'll eat the back end of a skunk if they can find it. They've learned not to let food sit too long or they have to fight the ducks over it. As mentioned our chickens and pigs will eat whatever they can get ahold off---flies would be a great bird treat.

these are dogs were talkin about right, you know what habits dogs have dont you. I dont mean to sound condesending not my intent. but thier dogs.
mine eat anything they can catch bugs, snakes, rodents, rabbits they never ask to have it cleaned deboned or cooked? thier grooming habits leave much to be disired also most so when grooming each other but thier dogs either I leave the room or make them cant stand that lapping sound.
they will also find the most foul things to roll in like yesterday one went over to the nieghbors field and rolled in the fresh horse pucky(when thier in our yard they bark at the horses but he wasnt interested in them headed straight for the first pile also the horses are very use to dogs the nieghbor who owns the horses came over thats how he was able to slip out before I get basted for allowing the dog to run) dead critters are a favorite too eat a bit and roll in the rest. and they like to do lots of other things that are pretty gross by human standards but perfectly acceptable to any canine. some of the stuff they can eat would make a person ill if not only the thought but the germs and bacteria eww and then theres things that people eat that could kill them chocolate for example. theres a reason over in the middle east and other places being called a dog is a major insult mostly for some of the things I mentioned and some I didnt. of course if the dog didnt like the flies Im sure the would just eat around them mine do that with certain vegtables in thier dish could be the most miniscule piece of something in a full bowl you will find it either at the bottom of a clean bowl or right next to it!

My dogs are weird. In a good way, I think. They don't like to catch and eat animals- that would spazz me out! (unless I'm telling them to to catch it), neither of them likes to get wet so no rolling in the mud like my last dog. No bug eating like my neighbors dog who crunches on june bugs.
I'm pretty happy with them. I don't want dogs who roll in poo and smell bad. LOL
I just didn't want it to make them sick.

Too gross?
For a dog?
You've gotta be kidding.
Lady, we're talking about an animal here that will eat their own poop if you let them.
I'd give it to them and wouldn't have a second thought about it.

I would not feed my dogs dog food with dead flies in it. I might pick them out...but I wouldn't feed it to them. They eat enough gross stuff as it is.
