I had to shoot at a guy tonight

I was outside and saw a guy between my tractor and the fuel tank. I put a flashlight on him and he hunched over in a threating matter. I then shot 3 rounds at him at about 75 yards. The sheriff came out and looked and didn't find any blood so he toled me that I should go to the range more often.

I agree with your sheriff. Go to the range and practice. Or buy some tracer rounds and aim for the fuel tank next time

Hitting a target is not hard but when they are ruining you can't be sure if you are leading them right. If I can get a target to run on the range it might be better than one that just stands their. I was using a 9mm Taurus Milliennium and at 75 yards you need to have a lot of luck hitting a stationary target much less a man. I was afraid that the sheriff would get upset but when I toled hem about it he said you needed to be lucky or unlucky to hit a target at 75 yards with that.

Wonder if he was looking to steal fuel? With all the meth problems he could have been looking for fertilizer or who knows.

Where I live you can't be sure but I think he was trying to steal My tractor or anything else he could pick up. I live in a place that took the Sheriff 30 Minuit's to arrive and they were ruining hard to get their that fast. I could hear the sirens for about 15 Minuit's before they cam into sight.

Well I'm sure words gonna spread around with the low class folks not to trespass on your place as it might not be a healthy move on their part.Nothing says stay away like gunshots coming at you!Still it was good shooting, cause if ya hit him and he lived the punk probably would have tried to sue ya,they no limits, till now.

Don't worry, your trigger happy fame will filter through the underworld.
Should help ward off any future pilfering.

Time to add a laser sight/beam the pistol? A nice red dot on a target and zeroed in at the range should put the fear into anyone.

i don't know,
shooting a man at 75 yards away is hardly 'self-defense' under the law.
you're probably better off missing those shots.

Same here. Very large county but sparse population. The sheriff's office is in the county seat. There is one sheriff and 3 or 4 deputies. When you call for help it can easily take a half hour or more before anyone shows up.

Did you check the fuel tank and tractor for holes?

i agree, your lucky you didnt hit them. Ever hear " if you shoot someone, be danged sure they are in your house"? and blowing someone away for stealing a gallon of gas will get you locked up and in a heap of trouble in no-time. Criminals have more rights then anyone else in this Country

People who can reliably hit man-sized targets at 75 yards from a combat stance using a pistol, are far and few between. Add in the fact that it was night and the target was moving...well, that makes it either impossible to do, or God said the thief's time was up.

It is probably a good thing you didn't hit him, for your sake. It would appear that tossing a few rounds in his general direction had the desired effect anyway. One thing to keep in mind is to not completely unload on anyone from that distance, just in case they return fire.

I like your sheriff.
When he courched in a threating manner like it or not you had to consider him a threat. I hope to never have to use deadly force but in that situation you have to consider that he was gaining a tactical stance that would enable him to shoot you. Don't like it but no choice after the choice that the low life made for you.

After reading the posts that seem to think you should not have done it - seems that there are different laws and expectations in their parts of the country.

As long as you were lawful for your area, you at least got him gone and your sheriff didn't seem too upset, or he would have advised you not to do that due to the laws in your area.

Be careful when you're out alone,
Watch your stuff, but maybe this will be a decent warning - at least for awhile.
