17 cents

Over the last couple of days, I've bought at least 40 packets of vegetable seeds from Dollar General. They have them on clearance for 17 cents a package, at least down here. All are packed for the 2009 season.

Some of the seed I've bought...green onions, beets, carrots, sugar peas, cabbage, lettuce, mustard greens, turnips, pumpkins, chives, parsley, basil, sweet corn, squash, roma tomatoes, bell pepper and cayenne pepper.

Part of the seed is for the fall garden, and I'll save the rest for the spring. I figure even if only half germinates, I'm way ahead...

Hmmm...may have to check the local one out. I never go in that store 'cause it's out of the way.

Are the varieties ones you typically plant or does variety make any difference to you?

Wow...all we have left here at our store is turnips and spinach. I already have too many of those. I don't think ours are marked down yet.

That is the brand we have in my DD's feed store. They are good seed. The DG here has American seed.

I had to laugh....last year $G had them marked down to two cents a package...I bought them all....they had to scan EVERY package, and that paper receipt was over 8 ft. in length. I love a bargain and have enjoyed the flowers and veggies so much this year.

Some are, some aren't, but I recognize most of the varieties. The okra was Clemson spineless, the beets were Detroit, corn was Yellow Bantam, sweet peas were Laxton's Progress, etc....

This is the sale I ran into last year too! LOL! People at the register looked at mel ike I was off my rocker....I bought every pack of veggies and flowers they had. They were mostly flower packs, but I opened them all up this year and mixed them up...spread them at the end of the garden and they are starting to bloom! I don't think our cashier scanned each one though...good gravy, I'd have had at least an 8' receipt too!!

Happy dance for a bargain!! Woohoo!

Until my cousins died I use to buy them at sales like this and send them to Croatia. The ones they could get there were generic. E.g., package marked beets. In one shipment I included a U.S. seed catalog. Heard back many in the village oohed and aahed over it.
