Anyone near Jones county NC...............

seen the dome house on 41 just east of Beulaville? I saw it yesterday and thought it looked really neat an wanted to know if anyone knew anything about it. It looks like it was built into the hillside, but with the flat land around here, I imagine that dirt was hauled in. Just wondering if anyone knew if that caused any problems fro the owner, or if it has the advantages of an actual basement house.

OK, I guess not. Alright, here is a question that maybe anyone can answer. If you live in a flat area and have dirt hauled in to create a sort of artificial hill, and build in to said hill, will you have the advantages you would normally have with basement type construction?

Example, I would like a root cellar eventually but with a fairly high water table and flat low lying land, digging into the ground is pretty much out. Would hauling in dirt work as an alternative? If so, what problems would I need to be on the lookout for?

I would think if your dirt pile is big enough it will work fine, although it's going to take a LOT of dirt. Probably too much for it to be worth the effort

You'd need to plant something to hold it together , or it will wash away in the first hurricane!!

I have been in a house around Beulaville that was built using grain bins and dirt pushed up and hauled in.You could not tell they were grain bins. There was even grass growing on top of the house. The inside was beautiful, with a spiral stair case leading up to the bedrooms.I'm not sure if its the same house you speak of.Its been right many years ago,but the name of the man that owned it was Dean Kennedy if my memory is correct. There were four(I think)grain bins used in the house.
