rodent control

Hello,

I am still not down at my place full time as of yet. I am alot closer at my Mothers condo on the lake, but still too far to drive every day. I noticed that I have a mouse or rat problem inside of the house. The house is by no means air tight, but I need to take control of this problem.

I was thinking rat traps but They would be rank if I had one in the trap every week when I returned. I am thinking something like Decon, but I am wanting something more industrial strength. I know that other critters can be harmed by eating poisoned rodents, but I have no other way to do it right now. Anyone have any poison suggestions?

We use a product called "just one bite". It gets them fast. For non-toxic control, you could try the plaster of paris mixed with cornflour and sugar or whatever the recipe is.

If you go to the Rabbits forum (under livestock forums) and type in a thread called simply "RATS" - you can read a lenghthy discussion there on just this topic. Lots of talk about options (and success) that people have had. We finally have the lead over the rats in our battle - but it was rough going. We waged war with quite a few different methods. Took about a year to get things under control - and it may have had more to do with external factors (new predators? colder weather last winter?) than it was totally our doing. Don't know.

Good luck!

If you use poison, you could end up with dead rats all over the house... with the resulting stench. Worse than the traps, where at least you are able to locate the bodies easily. You could try a good bucket trap. That way you can simply remove the bucket when you go there and dispose of the contents. It will be totally gross, but at least it will be contained. The instructions for the bucket trap are in the thread titled RATS!!! that LFRJ spoke of.

I am glad you said that, I was under the impression that products like Decon contained an ingredient that controlled the decomposition odor.

Thanks for the info guys! I will check out the "RATS" thread

please be careful with decon..my favorite kitten died of poison ..someone poisoned her..or a poison animal..she bled from her eyes, ears..etc..it was sad and ugly..and nothing we could do but keep her comfortable until we knew it was hopeless and then shoot her.

consider buying a couple of cats..a good litter box and a couple of self water and self feeders..and check on the cats every couple of days for companionship..until you get there..keep their water and food clean and filled and the litter box cleaned..and you'll get rid of your rodent problems..also if you want them to be able to go in and out..get a remote kitty door..that has a collar that allows them in and out of the house..but won't allow other critters in
