What is Twitter and How Do You Tweet
This may have been asked before. I am so behind the times with this stuff. Heck I just got my 1st full time cell phone.

Basically, it's a mobile IM service where you can send and receive short text messages- typically via your cell phone. You can also twitter on your computer w/internet access too, but most people like it and use it for the mobility. You can follow people, company or government agency messages that they post, so the subscribe option makes it a little unique. Make sure your cell phone plan includes a lot/unlimited text messaging though or you could get yourself some expensive tweets!

You pick a username and password and start telling others in 140 letters or less What you are doing...at the moment, sometime today, or what you are thinking in your thoughts. You may tell people to have a great day, or on a holiday to have a great holiday--I told everyone to have a great 4th of July.
Remember if you want to say or post a longer message then get a blogsite where you can spend time "talking" or writing a post. A blogsite is the place to share the recipe, whereas twitter is the place to say "I found this great recipe" and then include the url to the recipe next to your statement.

IM is general a one to one communication,. Tweets are one to many.
WHile people seems to like it, I personally dont care about most people moment to moment life events.

I'm behind the times, too. Have a Trac-phone, no bells or whistles, just a cell when needed. Hardly ever use it. Never been texted or sent one, no mp3 stuff, etc. My cell phone is almost never on and I have people all the time tell me to turn it on so they can call me. They don't understand that I don't want to receive calls when working outside, hiking, etc.
All these fancy cell phones, mp3s, and such seem like such a waste of money to me.

If you go to http://twitter.com/ they have a video link at the top right of the screen that shows exactly what it is and how it works.
I don't see the point, but maybe that's because my tweets would be pretty boring:
Wildernesfamily is making the kids breakfast.
Wildernesfamily is taking children to music lessons.
Wildernesfamily is doing laundry.
Wildernesfamily is grocery shopping.
Wildernesfamily is making lunch.
Wildernesfamily is sewing placemats.
Wildernesfamily is making dinner.
Wildernesfamily is exhausted and going to bed.

Just to let you know. you can set twitter up so only friends and family can read your "tweets" (messages). OR you can allow the public to "follow" you. I just joined it about a week ago because my uncle hoped the family would join so we could keep up with each other. Our family is pretty spread out across the country.

I guess I'm too old and out of touch because I really don't get the point of twittering.

I find that I can take it or leave it. It is fairly simple to sign up, and doesn't take much time. If anybody is following Twitter, feel free to look me up!

If it is worth saying, surely more than 140 keystrokes are needed to express it. (Yes, I know "I love you" doesn't need 140 keystrokes... )

It is another form of keeping in touch with people. I used to play a MMO almost every night and got to know a number of people doing so. Now I don't have as much time to play, so I am using Twitter to keep in contact with them. I don't tweet every little thing. Some of our more urban friends and family are interested in what it takes to get our little homestead up and running and keeping it so. We have a blog, but sometimes there isn't enough substance and/or time to bother with a whole blog post, so I just tweet.
A number of celebrities use twitter, and it is interesting to see what they have to say without a script. I am following Neil Gaiman, Drew Carey, and John Cusack just to name a few. For them it is a way to instantly communicate with their fans.
As with most things, you get what you put into it.

You all might have heard this, but some people were heading out on vacation and the woman "tweeted" about their progress out of town and what they were doing "at that moment". Needless to say, their house was being robbed while they were out. The cops figured that someone was following their tweet updates and knew they would not be home.

As best I can tell it is an electronic mutual admiration society for those with too much time on their hands.

Actually it's an excellent way for businesses, websites, etc to promote their latest news, products, articles and so on. When I post new articles, I typically put a link on Twitter as well as promoting it on Facebook.
People find work there, make friends there and form business connections. It is a very useful tool for those who know how to use it.

Twitter is a thin sliced spam delivery service for twits who dont understand why nobody returns their text messages.

I am with mnn2501 and Shrek. I took off text messaging off my phone plan because I figured it was pointless. If it isn't important enough for me to call me then it isn't important enough for me to read on a tiny screen either.

I dont twitter, dont tweet, dont text, and dont have voice mail. I have to have a cell phone for my job but when I retire in about 6 months it goes in the ocean.
I would be happy with a rotary cell phone with a party line. I just dont understand why so many people think they have to keep in touch all the time.
