Weird Power Outage

Last night about 11pm, dh and I were out on the back deck star gazing and cuddling (sure beats the garbage on tv these days!).

Our power comes by wire over Chalk Creek to our pole in the lower pasture. Then underground about a quarter mile to the house. We heard what sounded like 4 or 5 shotgun blasts, except with each boom the lights in the house flashed on and off. Then it all got dark and quiet. All dark downstream at the neighbors, too. Dh said, "I think our transformer just blew up!"

So we grabbed flashlights and while I got a couple lanterns going, he jumped in the truck and drove down to see what on earth was going on. There was a BIG, fried raccoon hanging from the transformer and wires. Ewwww....

The electric company came out and all they had to do was replace fuses. Only took them a few minutes. We know most of the people there and the guys were giving dh a bad time about cooking coons at night and so on. He just knows they'll be in and out of the tire store today to harass him about it.

Glad we keep flashlights handy and know where the lanterns are kept. Be prepared, you never know what can take out your power!

I wish some of the raccoons would get fried around our place! We have an abundance of them - I'm not looking forward to them raiding our garden once they discover it.

They are always after my chickens, my pens look like a maximum security prison, just to keep the dang raccoons out. I have no idea what he wanted at the top of that pole. Been here 20 years and that was a first.

I once watched a squirrel work his way inside a transformer.

A few minutes later there was a loud Buzzzzzzzz and a puff of smoke

In about 15 minutes a power company truck showed up, opened the transformer, and removed a very black, extra crispy object that FAINTLY resembled a squirrel.

Odd to hear that behavior from a 'coon. Squirrels are the usual culprits in these parts.

Dh and I were in Ga. for his DD's wedding. Our side of the family had a large block of Hotel rooms. After the Rehearsal dinner we all went back to the Hotel to no Power. Went and got a couple of lanterns, we all hung out having a little party. Turns out it was a racoon that had gotten in the Power box.
