Eddie, do you grow bamboo? I am thinking about starting a patch, but everyone is scaring me with tales of how invasive it is if it breaks out of the cage...

It's only invasiive if planted in an area that never gets mowed or otherwise tended. It's not kudzu.

Well, theres two kinds, running bamboo and clumping bamboo.Clumping stays pretty much where you plant it.Running will do just that, runnn. As Alan said,if you don't mow it,it will surely spread.I planted three patches ten years ago of running bamboo and it has spread about twenty feet in all directions from the original planting.I can keep it where its at by mowing, but if left to run,its going to run.Check out the link.It tells about all the different varieties and how each one grows.
It tells how to keep it in bounds and also the many uses you can use it for.I like it for bean poles, tomato stakes and just watching it grow from a shoot peeping out of the ground to a twenty-five foot bamboo pole in less than a week. Eddie

I will get bamboo on bridge access and a few other areas not in my yard if I do this- have been meaning to cut some for garden poles for a while but always afraid it'll set root and take over my yard.

Going to pass this along to my mom. Daddy planted bamboo (running) many years ago and it's running everywhere.

Don't plant it! You will NEVER be able to get rid of it.

Maybe I should plant some running bamboo for my kudzu to climb. Thanks for sharing the link Eddie!

HEREYA GO http://www.tytyga.com/category/Bamboo+Plants But if you was close,I'd give you some plants. EB PYRODON, I planted mine early spring before the new shoots started coming up and it did fine. I don't see why fall wouldn't work. As long as its not real hot or cold it should do fine.

Hi Don
I started my own bamboo by digging up a few sprouts less than 12" high. I dug and cut a big root section about 6" across with the attached sprouts and planted those. The growing roots were strong enough to break through the sides of the 5 gallon plastic pots I started them in.

DO NOT BUY ANYTHING FROM THE TY TY NURSERY. They are some of the biggest crooks in the nursery business.

There are plenty of other nurseries that you can buy from that won't rip you off. Those people are notorious.
