Those wire standoffs were primarily used when you had something like a glass coffee carafe that you were keeping warm on the stove. The idea was to prevent the uneven heating of the glass and limit breakage. They sorta worked.
A real diffuser for heat would be more along the lines of an aluminum or copper or brass plate. Maybe an old metal charger or a camp dish would work? Just be forewarned that they hold heat, and that aluminum can melt on a stovetop.
