dug well

just wondering what yall can tell me about dug wells. I know about possible dangers with ground water etc. I'm looking for sound advice as far as doability cost wise

been looking at http://healthvermont.gov/enviro/wate...l_diagram.aspx

Now I'm being told that it would be much cheaper to dig one of these (with a backhoe) than to have a well drilled (about $18/ft cased).. The guy is sure that this type of well will work and there maybe a spring on the place. Long story short I trust this guys opinions as he has done work for me in the past.

thoughts?

If you can reach it with a backhoe, how deep can it be? Maybe 20 feet?

At $18 a foot for 20 feet, that's $360.

I don't imagine the backhoe work can be much cheaper. I would think the grout and liner for the wider well would be more expensive too.

And the drilled well will be much safer in protecting groundwater. I don't see the economy in doing a dug well...
