Living in western NY you here of bears, but they are pretty rare, but my neighbor told me Thursday morning a bear was wondering around my pond. I looked for tracks, but the with rain we have had I found none. Wish I had seen it myself, but I had left for work about 5 min before he saw it.

We can an occasional 'visitor' in the area. This one was spotted in the area a few years ago.

I used to live in South Bristol. Every once and a while, one would stroll into town to check out the garbage cans.

they recomend not putting out bird feeders execpt for winter in northern wisconsin
i was just up near woodriff last week about 4pm a bear cub was at the burd feeder at the house infront of where we were staying , we went out fishing and about an hour late saw him on the other side of the bat he was making the rounds hitting all the bird feeders and whatever else he could find , broad daylight

we were discusing bear hunting and my dad could hardly belive that some animal rights group had not shut down the use of dogs in bear hunting
i said they serve a good perpose it keeps the bear in thier place they learn to fear and stay away from man and dog - cause it isn't just the few weeks of bear season it is training runs to get the dogs trained that take place much more of the time than actual season. but bear learn dog and man sent and that they should avoid them and find a tree when persued.

Talk about timing...a small black bear decided to visit the city this morning.

As you may be able to tell by the map, he found his way into a residential neighborhood (0.1 acre lots). Sadly, the poor guy died when he hit the ground after being shot with a tranquilizer.

I'm hearing about sightings more and more in WNY, although I've not seen any evidence of them. I'm not too far from you, just on the other side of Arcade.

We had one in a suburb of Dayton, Ohio last week. Are they reproducing more now, or are they being driven out of traditional habitat by development?

I have seen a black bear. It was a moving and life changing event. Loved it! Good luck and be careful!

I can't help it. It scares me to think about bear wandering around where people aren't used to them and think they're like teddy bears, especially children that might not know better.

We have so many bears around here that its illegal to have bird feeders from May to Sept and you get a hefty fine if your garbage cans arent locked up. We also have to be careful with compost and last year a black bear decided to make our raspberry patch a lounge and he destroyed most of the crop.

We enjoy seeing them but when they get habituated to people they usually end up getting destroyed.

Very interesting thread.

I have seen a few wild bears in my life, of course, while on vacation. It is an awesome experience, and memories that I cherish.

Not sure which was more cool, seeing wild bears in Montana, or the moose that sauntered through our campgrounds, also in Montana, just a few feet from our tent.

Clove

I saw one south of Cleveland Ohio some years ago. I was driving along I71 and saw it in a field along some woods. I thought, "that's odd I thought I saw a bear, impossible there are no bears around here". When I got home there on the front page of a local news paper was the story of the bear that had been seen all weekend, along with it's mapped travel route where I had just a while ago seen it. I think there are more of them now and they are moving into places where people don't normally see them.
