Anyone ever seen...

A lilac flower that looks like this?

Anyone ever seen... - Homesteading Questions

Everyone knows that normal lilacs have four petals but vary in colour from white to purple to multicolor. But something like this? I'd say it's quite rare. Wouldn't you? Especially coming across a SINGLE flower with NINE petals among a whole bunch of others that are normal!

Oh wow! That's neat. What sharp eyes you must have, to have spotted it!

Whenever I see things like this (we hunt 4 leaf clovers etc, and DD16 just found a 5 leafer) I always worry about radiattion or other toxins- in our yard the 6 leafer was near salt water discharge- might be causing these 'freaks of nature'. Cool!

While it is probably just a freak of nature or abnormality you might actually think about asking a company that propagates lilacs to see if it is something special that they would want to develop IF other than a one time deal.

Many of the old time flowers used to be just singles and are now double this or that.

Sports happen and that is where new varieties come from. If the flower head is still on the bush, mark the spot where the flower was/is and see if it grows a seed. You might have the beginning of a great new lilac variety.

Absolutely what Sunflower says. Mark that spot and collect the seed. Propagations from that might be of interest for new breed growers for sure!

Very nifty! If it had 8, I would have said twinning (I have a tomato plant that is twinned in every respect and I'm studying it and saving seeds) but with 9, that is something very special!

I might have to, just to see if it grows into something neat!

I dunno how I spotted it, I was just snooping around the lilac bush finding some flowers to take photos of when this little booger caught my eye. It sure is neat!

Old Vet Said: "Maybe the flower came from Monsanto."
---------------------------------------------------
Unlikely as the flowers around it have not died, the gardener is not bankrupt and suicidal, and there is no sign that Monsanto has sued all of the other lilac bushes.
