3 for a square bale. I have seen a few higher and a few lower, but most are around 3.

$4 a sq. bale, heavy bales and wonderful hay for our 27 year old mare. He uses organic fertilizer on his fields and never has a problem selling. $5 for second cutting with more alfalfa in it. This is out of the field price; more out of the barn. DEE

I havebn't seen any first crop yet here in NH but for NON-organic.....which may mean a chemical fertilizer every 7 years or so and up I'm buying first crop for 5-8 per bale.
It hurts - a lot

There is no organic hay around here. I've never seen or heard of any in this area.

I've not seen organic hay around here, but recently there was regular pasture hay, square baled, for $2.50 in the field, $3.50 from the barn.

I just wish it would stop raining so I could have hay rather than trees to bale!

I guess we have organic hay. We never put any sort of chemicals on it and fertilize using manure. We sell it for $2.25 for a square bale. Not sure what the going rate for rounds is. I think about $15.

I just called my hay guy to see if he had any left over from last year as I need a few (approx.) 15 bales to get me through the end of Aug till the 2nd cutting.
He is cutting first crop in the next week or so so I do not have This years price.
But he told me he had a heck of a time to get rid of last years hay to make room for this years~!! Good 45 to 50 pound bales.
Like he was getting $2.75 last year, very good grass hay, of which I want.
But he had to lower his price all the way down to $1.75 a bale~!
Now this was very good grass hay no rain, and stored in his barn~!
So I would think that this years is going to be around $2.50 a bale as gas and diesel is down a little from last year.
This hay also has no chemicals on it~!

How much does your small square bales weigh in your all area's ? anything under 8 dollars a bale is way cheap well atleast for our area.
We sale Clover/Grass for 8 dollars a bale. Vetch/Grass for 7.50 and cow hay for 7 dollars a bale. Most of my bales weigh 80 to 100 lbs.
I can never keep hay in the barn it seams I have people lined up in the field has it is comming out of the back of the baler there grabbing it.
Before the big rains out here in california we were cuttinga field almost everyday for other people now where stuck with our fields needing to be cut but were still getting rain.

No organic hay here but we sell square bales in the feed store for $6 per bale. Of course that is retail but even out of the field it is $5. Round bales out of the field is (i think) $45.
You can get cheaper hay but it will be full of briars and weeds.

Non-organic, coastal squares are almost $8 at our local feed store. We're short on rain down here, though, with temps nearing 100.

Many times I hear folks inquire about the price of hay. The quotes come back per bale.
It seems to me that kicker bales will weigh 30 to 45 lbs. The trucker bale weight 98 to 101 lbs. Then there are those in between that probably make up the majority of the hay that is baled. Their's are going to be 65 to 85 lbs. There won't be a 3 dollar per bale range between the heavy's and the lights.
There is a 7 bale per ton difference between 65 and 85 lb. bale but you will pay about the same per bale.
Who's getting ripped off?
My point.
If you aren't buying hay by the ton you may be getting ripped off. Also how do you know how much you are feeding your animals if you aren't feeding by weight instead of volume?
Take a calculator and a scale with you when you go and figure out really how much you are paying. You may be surprised.
No offense intended. Just an opinion.

I LOVE selling hay by the bale!!!!!! It is by far the best way for the hay producer to maximize his profits. However, when I purchase hay for either use or re-sale it is by the TON.
We are selling our hay for $5/bale out of the field this year stacked on your trailer or wagon by you. Delivery is extra as is wagon rental if you don't have your own. We also add a premium for storage if we put it into our barns. We have too much invested in equipment, fertilizer, management, and time to compete with the "Hobby Haymers" that don't value their product of time. Interestingly, we are sold out of hay while the hobby boys are looking for buyers.

I guess there is organic hay in our area, but it is very "weedy" and not advertised for sale. There is hay advertised on Craig's List for $3-4 per bale that has been fertilized and sprayed with chemicals for weed control.

The bales advertised at $2.50 were said to be about 55#. My daughter and I buy by the ton, and make sure it is weighed as we buy it. The bales we get weigh around 65-70# each.

I was at the auction today. Bought 308 sq. bales. Lowest price was .60 the highest was $ 1.70. It was 7 diffrent piles. The cheepest was alittle moist inside(baled too soon, not rain), this will be fed out real soon and will not go in the barn. The rest is a combo of this years(dry) and last yrs hay.We put all of our hay in round bales, our new Hay man cut on thurs.didn't bale on Sunday and Sun. night we got .69" of rain and Hail. Now looking for new Hay man.
