Anybody know Remington Shotguns?

I'm interested in getting a used Wingmaster 870, preferrably an older one. Don't know much about them other that how to load and fire.

It would be preferrable to get one that I can interchange between a smooth bore and rifled slug barrells.

Does the model go way back, like into the 1950's? Are the barrels interchangable throughout the model years?

Any help appreciated

The Remington 870 is the most popular pump shotgun ever made, and they are exceptional shotguns. Any barrel made to fit an 870 will fit. Slug barrels for them are available all over.

I don't remember the year they were introduced. I'd have to look that up.

The 870 Express is a cheaper, no-frills version of the gun. It has the same action, but doesn't have the "fit and finish" of the Wingmaster.

An excellent forum for shotgunners is www.shotgunworld.com. Tons of info availble.

I have two 870s ...one in 12 ga. and the other in 20. Love them both. Awesome scatterguns

Here is a 12 gauge Remington 870 Express to look at..

The barrels will interchange in the same caliber (12 gauge, etc..). Just watch what lenght shells that the shotgun is chambered for - 2 3/4" or 3".

I have 2 Remington 870's in 12 gauge - one Wingmaster and one Express. The barrels will swap between them..

Plus Remington made a nifty molded plastic case to carry your 870 shotgun and all of it's accessories in.. Where the shells are, is where the extra choke tubes would go.... Like the Rem-choke screw in choke tubes (full, modifed, improved cylinder, turkey) for the ventilated rib barrel..

A caveat...

Remington makes two receivers for the 870, the regular receiver and the LW. The LW was used on some youth and upland models, so it is not very common.

Regular barrels will not fit LW receivers and LW barrels will not fit regular receivers.

I liked that gun rack so much I got one for myself a while back. Handy and hidden when the bed is made. Love, love, love the 870.

The 870's just keep showing up here, though I like to spread them around in handy places.

it does actualy work to put a 2 3/4 barrel on a 3 inch gun just don't feed it magnums and the 3 inch barrel fits the 2 3/4 gun again limit yourself to 2 3/4 shels

this may not be recomended but is does work and we did run 2 3/4 slugs thu both guns with the barrels switched and we are still here to talk about it.

Over Christmas, I bought the 870 Express Super Mag 12ga. I figured for the extra money it worth it to have what would probably be the only other shotgun I would ever need. It can handle 3 1/2 inch shells with the super mag receiver. Also, the screw in chokes are nice.

Any ideas on what's a good price to pay for a used one? There is one at an auction, I'll attend.

I have "some" 870"s , best shotgun on the market... I bought an 870 Wingmaster off my uncle back in 54 and it was used then, so they have been around awhile,, Wingmaster is the 870 top of the line, their most expensive model.... I have an 870 with a slug barrel also...a different one..

I am so lazy

that I dont even use a folding stock. I simply have a youth 20 ga, with 3" steel #4's loaded for indoor recreational use. Nice and handy indoors.

For bears I had the 12 Ga 3 1/2" Turkey Special with a mod choke and 2 Oz of STEEL #2's. Gets their attention every time, so's you can get a slug into 'em.
