Septic system aerator/Power outage

We had a power outage today. When the generator kicked in, I made sure that all non-essential items that use electricity were turned off to save the propane.

We have a septic system with an aerator that runs 24/7. Had this been an extended outage, could that circuit have been safely turned off? The aerator has an alarm that sounds if the aerator is not running. The alarm can be disabled, but what kind of trouble would I have if the aerator were not running?

Thank you.
