Would my wife mind me planting corn in flower bed?

Have some extra seed sprouted with no room left in garden - noticed some bare spots in her flower beds. I could ask her, but wives do like you to surprise them with gifts, I've learned after 25 years of marriage. Unless I've read some signals wrong?

I reckon a gift could be taken differently by different folks, but I know my Yvonne would consider corn growing in her flower beds a point of issue, and not as a gift. I can get away with the odd pepper plants, and maybe even some radishes or leaf lettuce patches here and there if I call them "ground cover" but there is no way I am going to get away with corn stalks. That would be a close cousin to buying her a new arc welder fer her birthday.

P.S. If you have a pretty good bunch of that spouted seed, you could set it out in the sun to dry good, grind it up and have some malt, its handy for beer makin projects.

Just go ahead and plant it. She might complain, but she just don't want you to know that she thinks it's really pretty there. <> UNK

I don't think it would make it past the weed police. She knows what she planted in there and if something else shows up...it's gone.
I would have to ask, no surprises allowed in the flower bed.

Do you have a spare bedroom or soft couch to sleep on?

Who does the weeding? Chances are those corn plants won't be there long.

YIKES! The corn will probably shade the flowers and they will not do well at all.

I certainly wouldn't do it, but then I'm not married and don't have to think about such things.

Unless planted fairly close together the corn probably won't get proper pollination, hence poor kernel fill.

Dh knows better than to plant corn in my flower beds! We can't grow corn because the squirrels always tear it apart. If he put corn in my flowers, I would have no flowers!

I wouldn't really mind.
It would be nice to grow a vine on them like Black Eyed Susan vine..something that is not heavy and would give some height to the beds.
The only problem would be pollination.. you may have to hand pollinate to get good kernels.

Well, okay, I guess I probably won't. She has grown alittle too much corn in her day.

Of course, I could tell her in it's early stages that it's a fancy new ornamental grass they've developed - which gives me an idea - colored corn stalks for flower beds.

Just have a few handfuls - could find somewhere in the yard to sneak it in where watering is handy.

I have seen very lovely gardens planted in the U.K. with stalk of corn as centerpiece.

could you make a small "flower" bed and plant them there, maybe find some short growing sunflowers, herbs, and such. make a cute scarecrow and edge the garden in field rock... make it look like it has a purpose and she just might like it

Not knowing your wife, I'd have to say, tread carefully

Personally, I wouldn't mind. I love my flowers, but I'm a pragmatic sort of person, and would probably congratulate DH on his wise use of sprouted seed, and be happy of the additional corn harvest. It might even start a trend

She could use the stalks in the fall as decoration or some crafty thing a gig.

Ditto. Of course, I do that anyway. There's veggies in the flower beds and flowers in the veggie beds. They're all dirt beds that I've cultivated to grow things in, not too particular about what's growing there.

Just plant it.

If it stays and grows, you'll have fresh corn.

If she weeds it out, mope and sulk for a couple of weeks.

Then, maybe she'll let you buy a new boat.

well if it was ME I wouldn't mind as long as you planted them in "blocks" ..cause if you don't they won't pollinate properly and you won't get any corn.

corn is a funny plant..gotta plant it in blocks for wind pollination.

Speaking of ornamental corn-----the variety Kandy Korn does sometimes have some purple on it often making it distinguishable from others.
