Old Iron meat grinder...

I picked up 2 big old iron meat grinders at an auction. I cleaned them up and now I am wondering if they are like cast iron and need to be seasoned? Does anyone know what you do to make sure they don't rust?

One is a Keystone from Colebrookdale Iron works and the other is a Universal #3 from New Britain Conn.

Usually it needs to be oiled for it to keep it from rusting. Use olive oil on them. They were not made from cast iron but may be cast steel. Usually they were zinc coated except for the blades and cutter wheel. Once they are cleaned run a couple of pieces of bread through them and then oil.

The ones I'm most familiar with are tinned over the base metal and over time the tin can wear off. Works just fine without as it is thoroughly cleaned before and after and oiled to prevent rust.

I have several steel utensils, I just clean them good when I am finished and then spray a bit of pam on them, wipe down all the excess with a paper towel and put away till next time. Olive oil will work good too, or most any veggie based oil.

Ditto to what the others say about keeping well oiled. I use mineral oil as it doesn't get sticky like veg or olive oil.

Our are cast iron, and we use mineral oil to avoid stickyness.
