Well pump failure

Please help me diagnose... I know we've done this before but don't have time to search all the threads.

Soon after turning on the water at a much lower flow than usual I heard a new hissing sound from the wellhouse. Thought it was the low flow but it was air escaping the valve midway up the pump. When I turned up the tap water flow slowed and stopped in a few minutes. After that I realised the circuit breaker for the well was off- I am uncertain if it was off before I turned on the water or if it tripped off. Turning it on did not get me water flow or the hissing. (Will check again tonight after work.)

Any diagnostic advice before I call in the plumber is much appreciated. BTW this is just for my garden - we have 'city' water to the house- so don't fear for our health or hygiene.

What kind of pump? What kind of 'valve'?

With the limited info it sounds like the breaker tripped (don't know why) and the pump lost its prime. The hissing sound you heard could have been air being sucked into the system as the water flowed back down into the well.

.................Several things can cause a problem , (1) the newer pressure tanks contain an air bladder that has to be inflated thru a valve stem on top of the tank , just like a tire . The bladder should be inflated WITHOUT any water in the tank , too 2psi Below the kickin pressure setup on the pressure switch , so most water pressure switches are preset at 40psi kickin and 60psi kickout ! As the pump fills the tank with water the air bladder is compressed until 60 psi is reached and the switch turns off the pump motor . The reverse process causes the switch too turn the pump , ON .
.................(2)There is a Check valve that allows water too travel in one direction , towards the pressure tank . This is necessary too keep water from flowing backwards , back into the well bore when the pump motor is turned off . If it malfunctions , the pump will start pumping and shutting off , the water will backflow quickly and the pump will immediately be turned back on ; this cycle will continue until the pump motor gets hot , starts pulling too much current and eventually the breaker will switch off .
..................(3)the pump motor or the pump iself maybe malfunctioning and need replacement , one of the three is causing your problem . , fordy
