Hard to tell from the pic, but it looks like some sort of skink.

Yup, Five-lined Skink (Eumeces fasciatus). Big male looking to score some "tail" Only the males have the red head and only during the mating season. The younger ones have the brilliant blue tail (to draw attention away from the head.) It can lose the tail just like an anole.

I grew up in PA and I maybe saw a fence lizard twice even with all the time I spent in the woods. Down here I've got the 5-lined, anoles, fence lizards. Whole colonies of them inhabiting barn stalls and woodpiles and even my back porch. I've always had a thing for herps so it still a thrill. Did I mention buying my homestead was the best thing i ever did?

Skink? OK that makes more sense. I always thought it was Skank. Sort of insulting for a poor little lizard.

I can understand your confusion. A lot of the skanks around here have red heads too, usually obtained at the beauty parlor. We also have a lot of the two-toned skanks with blond/red or blond/black heads. The whole "tail" thing is another similarity.

I don't know, green boy.
I'd personally prefer grits.

AHAHAAHAHAH! Oh, Poppy! You're a riot.

I had one of the males on our walk out front. He was minus a tail, so I think the cats got hold of him. I coulda sworn I saw blood under his head and we thought he was dead. He moved a bit throughout the day and disappeared when the storm hit that day....
