Some People
Checked Craig's List this morning like always, found some 3 month old pullets for sale in a town 35 miles away. Contacted the lister, made arrangements to pick them up tomorrow, since we were going to be in that town anyway.
I spent the day getting the chicken house ready, cleaned and filled the water fountains, drove into town and got the cash she requested and a sack of feed, loaded up cages to haul pullets in. So, about 9:00 this evening I got an email from the gal...someone came by and she sold the chicks to them, offered her a buck or two more I guess.
People never cease to amaze me; does one's word mean nothing anymore? I don't know if I'm more angry or disgusted. Some folks seem to have no concept what accepting a deal really means. Something told me I should go and pick them up this afternoon but I didn’t want to make the extra 70 mile drive and foolishly thought I had them bought.

Well at least she bothered to contact you. I've shown up after driving a ways to pick up and item to find out it had been sold to someone else in the hour it took me to get there.

I feel ya. The same thing has happened to me more than once! Not even a consideration as to the amount of money wasted on gas to get there or my time wasted. More often than not these people don't have enough guts to apologize much less call and tell you not to come. People never cease to amaze me

But some other people;
Monday I contacted a seller on Craigslist with a snapper rider for sale. I made arrangements with him to meet after work and look at the mower. I told him I was very interested, but did not say I would buy it.
I show up to his house and end up taking the mower home. While we are loading it in my truck, using his ramps, he tells me not 30 minutes after I called a neighbor called him about it, and offered to buy it over the phone. The owner tells him he has a guy coming to look at it this afternoon and if I didn’t take it he would call him back!
Now you are ready for your chickens, you can jump on the next offer. You might want to place a want ad on Craigs for what you are looking for?
Got to give some people a break, for every person that shows up when they say they will, you got five that don't... :baby04:

If I had a nickel for every buyer who said they'd be by tomorrow to pick up the item and never showed, I'd be a rich man. Money talks, hot air walks. Always.
You're always welcome to come by tomorrow, but it's going to stay for sale until you do.

I hope you told this gal what you told us here. She should be made aware of how you put faith in their agreement and effort into preparations,

Craigs List is outside the realm of believing what people tell you on the phone or by email.
The person who shows up with the money gets the item. Period.
Expecting it to be different is futile.
The good news is you are ready for chickens when you find some!

Yep, exactly! I'm sorry that they didn't hold them for you, but I've been on the seller's side of the fence too. Had some people say that they were coming to get the item, waited around all day for them and they never showed up.

My son had a similar situation, agreed to purchase something, then drove about 50 miles one way, and the person had sold it.
However, I can also see the seller's position, I have agreed to sell several items on Craigs list that the people never showed up for, some of them I arranged to meet them somewhere and gave them my cell phone if they had problems, but was never called.

This international thing we are using - the internet - has opened up a world of trading & bartering, but it also has brought out a new class of inconsiderateness. And scams.
It is difficult to believe what people on the internet saw any more, as far as having something to sell or offering to buy something. Both sides of the issue have so many dis-honest folk out there, we have come down to not able to trust anyone.
Having a voice in the world and being able to search such a large area for things & deals is a good thing.
With that comes some negative as well.
I don't think anyone has a good answer for this? As a seller, you learn to take the first money that shows up, because the last 5 people that said they'd be by don't actually show....
As a buyer, you don't know if it is worth the bother to drive a few miles, as the item probably won't be there any more, no matter what the seller said.
Becoming standard operating procedure. Sadly.

Good lessons here. Thanks you for that. I would feel wronged too.
Wish I was ready for chicks! Gotta build, and set up maximum security!
You could have said: Will you hold them, I need to work all day today to prepare for them, I promise I will be there.
She should have said: First to arrive with cash gets the chicks.

My word is my bond. If I agree to do something then I do it. I know other people don't all act the same way but there are still a fair few who do.

Craigslist and deals
I would dare to say, the seller should have been more up front that she expects you to be there by a certain time or they would be sold off to someone else. But as a buyer, you can protect yourself a little bit as well to make sure they agree to your terms as well.
At least she called to tell you they were already gone before you made the trip to pick them up. That was something you can't always guarantee you will get either.

At least she called you! In tonight's paper, in the police and fire report section, it told of TWO different people answering a Craig's List ad for a free used cell phone. When each of them got there, they found a box on the porch waiting for them - full of HUMAN POO!!! Being as they both went to the same house, on different days, I hope that the police were able to talk with the house owner about that box of poo....

Goes back to the old saying: don't count your chickens until they are hatched, or in this case bought.

This isnt an internet thing, it is a sales thing.
The exact same thing could have happened 20 years ago when responding to a classified ad in the paper or a card pinned to a bulletin board.
It is nice if someone will hold something for you, but they are needing to sell, pure and simple. Grocery stores do it, hardware stores do it, restaurants do it, individuals do it. The one who has the money gets the item.
Next time maybe ask if a deposit would help hold the item for you?

Yep, that happens to me all the time, but, I wait until the prescribed hour and give them another hour before I would ever sell to someone else. color me as a dumb old fashioned hillybilly, but when I give my word I keep it. In the final analysis, thats all I really own. I value my word.
