Woodpeckers are pecking on my siding, any ideas?

I have had woodpeckers starting to peck on my cedar siding. What tips can you recommend to keep them away. I am home most of the time and go out to shoe them away when I hear one. Currently I have some silver ribbon near where they are pecking, though to no avail. Thanks Chris

are they pecking in one area? I've heard that sometimes that can be a sign of termites gathering. Sometimes other bugs. You might want to check that out just in case.

They are doing it to the house at our ranch too. They make holes to put acorns in, then come back later and peck the coddlin moth larvae out of the acorn.

We have trees with thousand of acorns stuffed in holes. Eventually the trees die.

The pioneer structures don't get the woodpecker abuse like the main house does. I think it might be the colors. The main house is cedar shakes painted dark green.

The pioneer structures are cedar shake painted iron oxide red and they don't have any woodpecker damage.

An orange oil solution-a little stronger than what you'd make to clean-wiped on the area will discourage them.

We hung one of those plastic owls when we were having trouble. It worked very well. No more holes.
