What is the best time to hunt mushrooms?

What is the best time to hunt for morrel mushrooms? It seems to me that it was after a good rain with a warm day that followed. Is this right?

Thanks, Happy

Today. I found 2 more little ones, hopefully many more to come. But the ground does have to be wet and you do need some warm days after a heavy rain, or several days of light soaking rain.

Any time is a good time to "hunt" them. Now finding them is more limited. The best time to find them is just before the next guy starts to hunt them. First come first served.

i finally made it out today and found a few. we had nice weather a week, week and a half ago, but it got cold again and was a bit early for here. now the time is right, but the weather has been a bit cold. the shrooms i found reflected the weather...i was just a tad early for the "all around" spot. there is another good spot i could go to where the weather is normally a bit warmer. i suspect it is prime there right now, but i am at the mercy of "the driver", lol. the all around spot should be prime after this weekend of warm weather.

you want warm nights around 45 degrees and you want ample moisture in the soil. too hot in the days or too dry and the season is real short.

I find morels and other tasty tidbits of their kinship to be more plentiful after a spring rain, followed up by one or two days of warm (75+) sunshine.

I found about 2 dozen morels yesterday. We have been hunting over the last couple weeks and find a couple here and there. It stayed warm last night so they should be popping there heads up this morning. Also going out this moring to digs some ramps.

Heard you could make a sort of a living from collecting mushrooms and taking them to a mushroom broker? Heard that if you dry your mushrooms before selling them, you make more $$ because the broker does not want to deal with drying them. Supposedly some western states have people doing it for a living. Dunno how and I would speculate that you would have to be a good mushroom indentifier!

Morels go for $35/lb.

Best time to hunt, when the PROS start finding them!

I think the time is now! My wife said she saw someone walking along the road about a mile from here with his arms full of them. I think we will go scouring the woods after we milk the cow.

Wow! $35/lb. I hope I find a few pounds!

I found about 2lbs worth today and its really dry in the woods even after a couple days of rain. Some of them were kinda dried up but after some time soaking in water they will be fine to eat. I always find them in the greenest areas of the woods it seems.

you scratch up the ground like flock of turkey. do that in an area where the morels don't grow, and every idiot ground-scratching morel hunter will hunt the area that is torn up. you need decoys for the hunters, not the mushrooms.

as far as the morels themselves...everyone knows you gotta sneak up on them or they disappear.
