Orienteering help

The starting point is:

N44.17.994
W088.24.738

You travel 948 feet east.

Then 531 feet north.

What are the Waypoints of the new location?

Okay here's the best I can do:

Your numbers are not in the standard coordinate format. If I interpret your numbers as degrees and then decimal minutes, I convert your start point to:
44°17'59.82"N
88°24'44.28"W

Then, your east point is:
44°17'59.82"N
88°24'31.15"W

And the end point is:
44°18'5.05"N
88°24'31.15"W

Converted back into my guess of your format:
East:
N44.17.994
W88.24.519

End:
N44.18.084
W88.24.519

And here is an arial photo:

Hmmmm!

Looks like I may have put down the incorrect start.

The start point should have been on a highway.

Gotta check my notes!

W088.24.696

Then---west 948 feet
and north 531 feet.

"Your numbers are not in the standard coordinate format."

Tell me more about this conversion you are making.

Why is it needed?
What is the difference between the "standard coordinate format" and the numbers I'm using?

(Give me a mini lesson, please.)

Still doesn't start in a street. Maybe you should tell us how you are getting these numbers?

I was assuming that her GPS was using "degrees and decimal minutes" from the link that wolf posted, and just using a decimal place for the degree marker if it couldn't display that.

The "old fashioned" way of expressing coordinates is degrees, minutes, seconds. One degree is one 360th of the earth, a minute is one 60th of a degree and a second is one 60th of a minute. GPS equipment can usually operate in this mode or in decimal degrees, expressing fractional degrees as a decimal rather than in DMS. You can also do full degrees and decimal minutes with no seconds which I think is what your GPS is doing. You should check the user manual to confirm this or change the setting to another.

Tallpines, your second set of coordinates are only slightly different from the first and puts it close to US-41. You also said to go west this time instead of east, was that right?

Here's a pic of what your start and end would be now (I omitted the intermediate point). The pins in red are the new ones.

It's a geocaching search.
http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache...2-124b3c855724

I had to find 4 geocaches to get the clues for the fifth and final cache.

Initially I had given you the coordinates for one of those first caches.
The second set of coordinates were the CORRECT Clue.

N44.17.946
W088.24.696

I thought that second set would be on the Highway since they gave the hint:
"Do NOT go the above coordinates unless you want to get run over!"

Then 948 feet EAST, and 531 North.
(I am guessing at the North and East part based on the lay and ownership of that tract of land.)

So---according to your diagram, and correcting the numbers to be in accordance with the correct waypoints, the final cache should be about 1/2 inch under the "O" in the word "north" on your second photo?

That is a good possibility since there is a large sign with shrubbery right about that area and would make for a good hiding place.

When I searched yesterday, I was TOO far to the east, and not far enough to the north.

When I go back, I will look in the area that your info gives.

Unfortunately, I live 125 miles from there and won't be able to check it out for a month when I go to visit the folks again!

Starting at "Start2" and going East and North, the final coordinates should be:

N44.18.033
W88.24.477
