Home remidies.

The post about remedies for heart burn got me thinking about other home remedies. My mother was not a drinker but she made a home cough syrup. I am not sure of the exact recipe but I know it involed Honey and Whiskey. I think there may be another ingredient. No matter how made the cough was a dose of this would put you to sleep which helped with the miserable feeling. You didn't cough as much as you were gasping to much from the burning going down you throat. Another thing was Vicks vapo rub that was my mother's treatment. she would rub it on your chest and then put a cloth over it. She would put some vicks in a pan of boiling water and we would put our head over it with a towel. She put something else on my chest and I hated it and I think it might have been a musterd plaster. Ok what other home remedies to we have?

One that works for us: 1 jar minced garlic, drain off juice. Pour over garlic Braggs (or other good) apple cider vinegar. Let sit in dark cupboard with lid loosly on for 2 weeks or more. Drain off vinegar, measure. Add equal amount honey to vinegar. Makes a wonderful imune boosting syrup when a cold is coming on, and great to cook with!

University of Pigh's Children's hospital made a cough syrup of 1:1:1 vodka lemon juice and honey. I'm sure whiskey would also work.

I have collected home remedies for several decades, and put them together in a book (not yet published). There are literally thousands of them!

There are an infinite number of remedies for coughs. Two I like just for the taste are:

equal quantities of honey, lemon juice and vinegar. You can add a dash of any alcoholic beverage if you like, but it won't have any medicinal effect.

Boil together some elderberries and brown sugar. Take it from a spoon as required.

A google search for 'home remedies' showed 8,850,000 sites on the subject!! Take yourself on an amazing journey as you investigate them all. You might never have heard of some of the herbs mentioned, but I'm sure you know tomatoes, bananas, strawberries, lemons, potatoes, pumpkin...... all of which have medicinal uses and which have been traditionally used in home remedies for a whole range of things.

the one I have uses whiskey and honey with some lemon juice, peppermint, and horehound in it. It will make you sweat out a cold. Last time I made it I also steeped some elderberry tea bags in it.

I had pertussis as a child. The Dr. told my dad after about 6 months of codiene cough syrup that it was not working anymore so that had to discontinue its use. He had my dad take a teaspoon of sugar, add a few drops of whiskey, lemon juice, and honey, and I had to suck it down my throat. It was yucky, but it calmed the cough and I slept. I eventually quit having the cough.
