Winesap Apples
.
When I was young, the orchards around us grew a great tasting Winesap apple. I have searched for them over the years wanting to plant a few of my own. The only ones I can find are red and green sort of like a Johnathan, (I think they may be called "stayman" winesap) and are not near as good. The original ones were an even dark reddish purple with no green on them. Does anyone know a source for these?

Here's a link that shows all the different names of the Winesap apple.
You might be able to find what you are looking for that way.

Grandpa's doesn't list them
They were great apples, a little on the small side, tart, and VERY crisp...they never got mushy. They were the last apples the orchards picked. I remember the last group of them in the last orchard that survived, I thought then that I should get some cuttings and bud them onto some new stock...but of course I never took the time

With your being in central Missouri why don't you contact Start Brothers Nursery over at Louisana or even take a drive over there to see if they have exactly what you want. If they don't have it as you want it I'll bet they have old stock and could graft one up for you in a year to two.
This one might be the same since it is listed as being an old favorite for around 90 or so years and called Winesap.

Original Winesap

Have 2 winesap trees on order.
I have ordered trees from here a couple years and have been very pleased.
Winesaps are my favorite apple, but seem to only be available in the fall. If I go to the store today plenty of Delious, Macs & Empire, no cortlands or winesaps.

Very close, I don't remember the "stripes" but it has been a good many years since I last saw one. They had no green or yellow on them what so ever. Do you have a scource up that way?

I tried to get them from Stark's about 10 years ago, I had gotten other trees from them for my former place in Illinois, and at that time they had really good stock. They did not have the "old fashioned" winesap though, just the ones that looked like Johnathans.

Sounds like a good lead. I need to give them a call and see if it is the dark red one. Thanks!

No, those are from an antique 'mystery' apple tree that is growing here...some have told me the apples look like winesap.
The apples are delicious, if you're interested and someone told me how to do it, I could take a cutting from it for you.

they look like the Paula Red apples from my neighbors tree...
we have an elderly apple tree we finally decided to rune and attempt to get a crop for cider at least...I think it might be winesap.
On the bright side, we bought a ten dollar big lots granny smith two years ago and got a bushel last year.

Oh, I do remember those delicious dark red Winesaps! They were my favorite apple when I was a kid and I am also trying to find some to plant in my orchard. Thank you so much for posting this inquiry! I'll be checking out links and following this post in hopes of finding some for myself as well.

Do they mature late and are they very crisp and a bit tart?, if so they might be the one. If I don't find a source, (and I remember ) I might contact you in the fall to see if you can send me a newer twig with dormant buds.

We use Stayman Winesap and York for apple butter every few years. I am not sure the orchard sells the trees or not. If you want a similar apple to the Stayman Winesap you can try an Arkansas Black which is similar in properties (Last a long time in storage and a spicy cider apple). The orchard we get them from is in Romney WV.

Good Luck! I bought "blue" iris for my MIL, they turned out to be the regular old purple variety. I bought a "red" peony from them. It took 4 years to bloom (which isn't that unusuall for red, they are slow to develope) except it turned out to be pink. They had some Junipers there they were advertizing as Juniperous Scopulorum It was obvious from the foliage and growth habit that they were not that variety.... I notifed the manager, and he said he would take care of it. The next week, they will still marked the same. I don't buy stuff from them anymore.
