Making Moonshine on PBS
Anybody see "Popcorn Sutton"on pbs this past weekend, showing how to make a still and make shine in the NC mountains.It was interesting and looked like a lot of work.

Associated Press had a story on him on March 18. He committed sucicide rather than go to prison. He was 62. He had also written a book called "Me and My Likker" Last of the old timers gone now I guess

Darn, I missed it! 
I'd never heard of Popcorn until after his death, but he seemed like a neat guy. Local people said that even law enforcement bought moonshine from him. I'll have to check PBS and see if they're replaying it.

Had a bit of some refreshing elixar out in NC a couple of years ago.
The local term for it was "apple pie"
Shore wish I had that recipe.

Never knew Popcorn but being from the hills have had experience in my younger days with the white lightning trade. Some of the hardest work you ever done, you carried everything you needed into t he woods no wagons, trucks they left trails a blind man could follow.
The smoke was always a problem.
Me I prefered hauling it $50 to $75 for a load delivered to Atlanta, they furnished the car, gas you just drove. That was a weeks pay on most jobs at that time. Never even tried the stuff, that sounds strange but a couple of friends a year or so older got some bad they stole. I found them that leaves a mark.
I am 68 retired from all that foolishness. But there are still some around like me that ain't retired. Popcorn is passed but pop skull whisky probably aint. It is cheaper to buy bonded and really safer than to try making it. My advise is never ever as there is always a chance it is poisoned and be accident and you will never know untill it is too late.

he was my neighbor.
while his widow blames the feds for his death, the truth is he was a severe alcoholic from a young age. he was to report to federal prison for 18 months last week and was afraid to be without his liquor. he chose to die instead of going through detox again.
he was really good at getting attention for himself. many people saw him as a charming old mountain man.
this video interview with johnny knoxville gives a more realistic picture of his character. BEWARE!!! it is NOT family or work friendly!! don't click on it if you are easily offended by profanity!!
btw, he is far from the last, tho he liked to portray himself that way.

Yea, that was the title of the show "The Last One" There was some cussing in it though.I like those mountain folks,kinda wish I was from the mountains.Those folks seem like my kinda folks,I could set on a porch all day and listen to them telling about times gone by.Seems like goodhearted folks to me. the vast majority of my neighbors are salt of the earth type people. i feel privileged to live among them.
popcorn is no local favorite however.

Come to the Hancock County, TN fall festival. Every year they have a still set up making tractor fuel that they let you sample in shot glasses.

Yep.
That is sho nuf the truth. I have some medicine in my freezer and am lined up for a little more. I can't straight drink it, but if TEOWAWKI, I will have plenty of medicine to soak herbs etc.. in.

I knew popcorn and his family all my life. and have drank my shair of his moon shine.
Popcorn is a local favorite here in Haywood county, But Johnny Knoxville is not.

just fyi, i tried making tinctures with moonshine. when i took a dose i about poisoned myself.
do everyone a favor and invest in good, store bought 100 proof vodka to make tinctures/ shine is best used straight, over rock candy or in a toddy to cure sickness.
a favorite shine recipe is to take almost any kind of fruit in a quart jar and fill up with mooonshine. let sit for a couple weeks then decant through cheesecloth, squeezing out as much as you can.

Hey.
When I lived in KY we called it white lightnin'. We'd pass it around in ball jars at git togethers. It had a pretty good necklace, so you'd be sippin' it. Rock candy and fruit in it is for womenfolk...

Good shine is hard to find these days.......  ....Back in my teenage years, local purchased shine was the drink of choice for the weekend....$1.00 a quart .......

In NC the ABC stores did sell shine. It is called Ga Moon and comes in a quart jar. It is pretty good stuff. Also Apple Brandy is good. All brandy is is real good wine run through a still. Some call it apple jack. Hope you the best. Sam

Shine is easy to find here in the mountains
But really good shine is hard to find.
I have a bud. who is one of the best, he don't do it for the money , but is a conisure of fine home brew.
A gallion of shine is going for $40 - $50.

An old moonshiner told me theres two kinds of shine, one is made to drink, the other is made to sell. Theres a big difference twixt the two. Good shine should be 100 proof, and doesnt burn goin down. everclear isnt exactly what I would call good sippin liquor.

Last i bought was from Franklin county, Va. $10 a quart. Tasted like kerosene and blistered my face as it dribbled down. It was so nasty, I took it up the road to the late "Muletrain" Tate's house. "Mr Tate", I said, have a drink of likker." He took the lid off, had a big sniff, and said "No, thanks" I was prepared for that, so I pulled out this big old gun from under my coat. "I said have a drink of likker, durn it!" So he finally had a drink. I handed him the gun and said, "Now, you hold the gun on me and make me have a drink"
Somehow we got through the entire quart.

My Great-Grandfather was a moonshiner back in Haywood county, and I've known Popcorn since I was kid, hadn't talked to him in a long time due to the military, but he was always nice enough to me growing up.

Good book for someone that can't find a mentor and wants to learn. My friend's dad gives me the "how to make good shine" talk every time he is in this part of the country. He always has a half-empty jug in his lap. Gotta love'em!

With all thats going on in the world, why would the feds take the time to arrest and prosecute Popcorn Sutton? Was it because he was just a lot easier than the drug gangs?

Guess Popcorn Sutton got too much publicity with the Moonshiners and Rumrunners and Appalachian Mountains Hillbillies programs on The History Channel over the last few years.
I remember on one of the programs , they ended his segment with him dancing a jig on his porch.
When I was 11 or 12 a local retired depression era moonshiner passed away and at his funeral his widow had a string band play "Mountain Dew" for him and his old friends who were there to see him off.
