Wendell Berry

Anyone read any of his work? I heard a few interviews with him and started reading what our library has of his work. I find it really good home steading fiction.

He is fast becoming one of my favorite authors! I am really enjoying his "Port William" series. Hannah Coulter is my favorite. His essays take me a while to go through, but I am always edified when I read them.
He and David McCullough are some of the best writers out there right now, in my opinion.

Some of his poetry is good too. He's become an activist against mountain top removal mining. I've started on his Port William series and it looks like I'll have to donate some books to my library.

I also love his essays. My favorite Berry book is The Unsettling of America; fits right in with Homesteading Today.

I had the privilege of hearing Wendell speak at the ALBC (American Livestock Breeds Conservancy) conference when it was held at Shaker Village, in Pleasant Hill, KY. He is so common-sense in his approach to farming (what farming used to be, not chemical farming) and livestock. After his talk several of us who raise sheep sat around with him and just talked sheep - he's like talking to one of the old farmers at the local co-op, just a genuinely nice guy who isn't affected by his fame.

Wendell Berry is one of the most responsible, radical, and compassionate thinkers and writers and poets around. He is inspiring! Wonderful! gosh, how I love his stuff.

Got to hear him read poetry maybe 30 years ago, in a small room with maybe 15 other people. Have been reading 'The Unsettling of America' just this week!

Such a voice for people. For farmers. For the soil. For communities.

Some of his stuff can be dense to read - as a poet he form his sentence structures very compactly, full of more content in many fewer words than other writers. It may take some work to read his essays. But so worth it!

I LOVE Wendell Berry and am slowly working my way through all his prose (not a poetry fan) as I acquire the books. Just finished Another Turn of the Crank.

I am the proud owner of a signed hardback copy of The Gift of Good Land, which is one of my favorite reads. Got it secondhand for a song. Hardback copies of that book are impossible to find.

"Jayber Crow" was a wonderful book, too.
WeaverRose, I wish I'd been there for the sheep talk. Grandmotherbear, I don't think I'm a poetry person either, but now I'm curious. It's always good to keep an open mind, right?
