Horsepower of older Ford 3000 Tractor
Dh has an older model, blue Ford 3000 Tractor. (we are thinking a 60s model?). I am trying to find out what the horsepower is for him. We have not paperwork with it but I wanted to know how you find out what the horsepower for it is. Any suggestions?

Thanks, does it matter what year it is? I really couldn't say if it was a fifties or a sixties model but I think he said it was likely a 60s model. I do know it is a 3 clyl. diesel.

Ok, he is out running the garden tiller and planting potatos and I told him I would research this for him (he won't touch the computer) and I don't want to go out and interrupt him with this.
On the frame under the seat ares is stamped FoMoCo (which I assume means Ford Motor Company) then under that is C5 NN 7006 Z, under that is a 2, under that is a diamond shape (I think) and the numbers 173 66 or 56, I can't tell for sure if the first letter is a five or a six. Does that help?

ok I think it has to be a 66 because if I am researching correctly, the 3000 series didn't come up until after 56.

It is is a Ford 3,000 it was made between 1965-1995, 3-cyl in gas or diesel. PTO HP for gas was 38.3, for diesel 37.85.

Yay! Thanks, you are correct, Stephen. It is the 40hp. I will be able to tell dh and I know he will appreciate the info. Thanks to the info and the link from js, I will be able to run a copy of the specs for him to keep on file.

ok, well never mind my dumb questions. Dh just came in for a beer and I gave him the info...it was all what he wanted and he is tickled. Thanks all!
He was looking at some tiller boxes and the six foot one required 40 hp so now he knows he can get it...once we have the money of course. lol

PTO hp is what you're putting out at the shaft. It's a better measurement than the engine hp.

Have you ever used a tiller on a tractor? I borrowed a friends and I wasn't impressed enough to want to buy one. My garden is 50x100 and I use a ripper after it's been plowed then a disc and rear tine tiller for rows. Those tractor tillers are a little pricey.

Yes, he has. (I have never even driven the tractor or run the little garden tiller) I figure if he mentioned it he knows what he is talking about. Our garden is pretty big and for all I know he may have all kinds of other ideas/reasons for wanting one. I think he might be looking at a used tiller but you are right all those tractor implements are pricey. I could use a manure spreader. We would like to have equipment to put up our own hay from our pasture too.

I've had good luck with my pto driven tiller. After plowing my older brother's garden a few times with mine, he went out and bought a 6 foot model (2 feet bigger than mine) at TSC. He's been very happy with it too. They can be pricey, but we both bought ours on closeout at the end of the gardening season.

Use to own one, a gas model. Bought it "new" in 1974 traded it in on a TN-60A about 2+ years ago. Think I should have spent the money to repair it instead of trading up.
I sent you a PM about it.....

The little 3000 could be rebuilt into a compact 50 hp using the same block. The 4000 is basically the same tractor... most used a different front end but that wouldn't matter. I'm going to get my 3000 gasser re-engined to a 4000 diesel hopefully this year if I can coax my retired mechanic back into the shop for a week.
