I want to paint a red tube gate that has some rust on it. Has ayone ever painted anything with asphalt paint? Does it dry completely,is it messy in the summer?

It will dry to the touch but after a few years it may dust up a bit. If you have it use it. BTW Where are you in NC. Im from Northern Vance Co

Just curious.

Why not just use spray enamel?

I am in harnett county. I am interested in the asphalt paint because it supposedly will protect wood from decay and protect metal from rusting. Just seems like something to have around the farm.

asphalt paint

I have used the Henry brand asphalt on T-post and metal gates. The stuff has held up well over 4 years except around the bottom of the T-post where the weed eater string has taken off the coating. The metal dries (but not completely) after approximately 1 day (Temperature and humidity does have an effect on the dry time. I put two coats on everything. I have stopped weed eating around the post and treat that area with round-up. I put the coating on with a brush. I am well pleased so far.

It will work much better if you can remove all the rust you can & wipe it down. TIP= Thin the paint for easier application & to make a gallon go further. To thin the paint --use gas & it will dry much faster--- Use diesel & it will dry slower. Use a cheap brush & throw away.
Also, this paint is good for coating & preserving R.R. crossties.

Cliff: I went to school at Zeb Vance school, back in the early 50's. Use to be good friends with a Cliff. Edwards, I'm pretty sure was his last name. I think it was in Kittrell.
