RANT - Tired of fake milk products

I am so sick of the adulteration of milk products that I could spit. First it was not being able to buy milk that had milkfat and was NOT homogenized. Then it was the addition of guar gum to every brand of cottage cheese and to most ice cream. I cannot eat guar gum because it causes a severe mucous problem in me. Now I'm finding that all the heavy creams have carageen gum in them along with other adulterants.



COWS DON'T PRODUCE PLANT GUMS!!!

REAL COTTAGE CHEESE DOESN'T HAVE GUM IN IT ANY MORE THAT WINE HAS WRIGLEYS!

REAL ICE CREAM DOESN'T HAVE GUM IN IT! IT ISN"T A FROZEN RUBBER BALL!

REAL CREAM DOESN'T HAVE GUM IN IT TO THICKEN IT! IT IS THICK BY DEFINITION!

REAL MILK DOESN'T HAVE ITS FAT BROKEN INTO ARTERY CLOGGING PARTICLES!

What these marketing geniuses and bean counters want to do is sell water with white food coloring and gum. It is cheaper. They can eliminate the cow entirely over time, just like they did with those fake milkshakes at McDonalds.

I've been around cows enough to know that I don't want to be milking twice a day every day just to get a friggin glass of milk, or some real cottage cheese (which I used to love). Putting gum in the cream was the last straw for me, since now I can't even buy skim milk and put the cream back with it.

Have you noticed that there is now an entirely new market for mucous reducing medications? Ever wonder WHY that might suddenly be needed and popular???

Yes sir, you are right on about the thickening agents in most brands of dairy products. You will really have to do some searching if you want to find some pure milk products.

Some people make their own cottage cheese, it is quite an easy thing to do. Even with the 'white water' from the store, at least it doesn't have guar gum and carageenen in it.

You tell 'em! I don't know how it is in Alabama but up here in the great dairy state I could get real milk from any one of the many farms that are in the area. Heck if I really wanted to I could get the stuff for free from work I can get real dairy products up here, and I love my cheese and milk so fake junk wouldn't cut it for me. I feel your pain

Hey, maybe we could put chlorine bleach in it to make it whiter............... Oh, I forgot, they already do that to chicken dip...............

It sounds like they really got your goat. How about if we get our own goat and let them stick their gum up their imported MILK SOLIDS>
I guess that's what they are doing now ain't it. DANG

Have you checked your local organic food store? We have a local brand that is pasteurized but not homogenized and it's amazing. I never liked milk till I tasted theirs. It's not cheap, but it's good.

Get some milk goats. Start with two. Try not to get more. They are addictive!

Homemade milk products are AMAZING!

We have a creamery here that caries Pasteurized but not Homogenize milk the only thing it has added to it is vitamin D (required by state law). It is great to have the milk that has the cream on top just like real cows milk.

Whole Foods (a chain of organic/natural grocery stores) used to carry the non-homogenized milk. It's been awhile since I've been to one, and I'm not a big fan of milk, but DH thinks it's the best stuff around here.

We don't drink enough milk to make having a dairy animal worthwhile (not to mention they aren't allowed here anyway) so I would love finding a local source of really good fresh milk.

"local" organic food store... that would be a two hour drive to B'ham or south of Nashville. Milk goats - do you milk once a day or twice? Twice wouldn't happen and I wouldn't want to put an animal through that type of pain. We do need brush goats, so it might be an option.

You already know the solution to your problem, but don't want the solution. Complaining and ranting are fine and dandy, but it really doesn't solve anything.

Don't want to milk a cow twice a day?

Get a goat, let the babies feed all day, put the doe up at night, milk her in the morning, and let her loose for the day. Too much milk? Get a smaller goat. Not enough? Get a larger one. That's what we do... we have some does that make a pint, some make three quarts, on each milking.

that is not the same thing as cows milk.

Maria - not sure where in AZ you are located, but there IS an organic, raw milk dairy located here in Queen Creek. They sell off the farm only, I believe, but are completely legal (certified, blah, blah,blah). The phone number is 480-248-4614; not sure if there is a waiting list or not.

It's expensive, but amazingly good stuff!

Thanks dezeeuwgoats, I'll give them a call! Who knows, maybe I'll like the "real" stuff better than what we currently get.

Just got done with some bread and milk and molasses - milk out of the cow an hour ago.

This thread reminded me of an Andy Rooney piece I saw in 2005 on 60 minutes - video here:

Before milk was homogenized - that's mixing the cream in with the milk - cream came to the top of your milk bottle. If they took the cream off the top, they skimmed it off. What this ought to be called is not "Skim Milk" but "Skimmed Milk."

Saturated fats are bad for our arteries. We all know that, but do you know how much fat milk has in it as it comes from a cow? About 3.2 percent. So 2 percent is no big reduction.

I like half and half on my shredded wheat but when I say "half and half," I mean half milk and half cream. I bought some half and half the other day and I didn't like the taste so I looked at the label to see what it was half of and what the other half was. Listen to these ingredients: "Nonfat milk, milk, corn syrup solids, artificial color, sugar, dipotassium phosphate, sodium citrate mono, and diglycerides, carrageenan, natural and artificial flavors, vitamin A palmitate". This is half and half? It's not half anything I want and it has nothing to do with something as good as milk.

Three and a half percent is what they call Whole Milk. Why don't they just call it milk? Some of this other stuff tastes more like whole water.

They all like to use the words "farm" or "dairy" on their cartons.

One came from Farmland Dairies in Wallington, N.J. We went to Wallington looking for a dairy farm. The address was 520 Main Avenue. At the "farm," there was no cow in sight.

My suggestion, if they want to sell more milk, is that they go back to selling what comes out of a cow.

1. I feel your pain...it took me a long time to find half and half with simply milk and cream in it.

2. My husband raved for years about his aunt's dairy and drinking raw milk...so I gave in...I tried raw milk from several farms in the Lancaster County area and ewww...i just couldn't manage it. I don't know why...but it's just not the same. Icky! Maybe because they were mostly grass fed cows?

3. I am sorry...but I tried goats milk candy recently...it was a little "arm-pit'ish"...lol! Think is was just bad candy or the taste of goats milk?
