Ponds / Raising fish

Does anyone know where you go to get Talapia in Pa. to put in your pond? I have other fish in it that were there when I bought this place.~ Thanks, Kathy

Your post got me too googling for places to buy fish, since DH has been talking about getting bass.

Apparently, tilapia are illegal in PA, except with a permit from the Dept. of Ag. See 71.6 (b) http://www.pabulletin.com/secure/dat...2-37/1591.html

Figures....

You need to check with your state to see what is allowed. Out here, we can only put native species into our pond, and thankfully, trout is native and is very good eating!

My friend, Tilapia will die if the water temp is below 60 degrees. Never been to Pennsylvania, but my guess is your water gets below 60 degrees at least five months out of the year. Wouldn't be enough time to grow them out, even if you fed them daily.

Thank you all for your helpful input. Thanks for that warning, Razorback~ My pond is springfed & 55F year round where the springs feed into it. In fact, my horse tub in the pasture NEVER freezes, even in Feb. when it's burning cold out there because it's fed from a pipe from the springs.

Don't know what they carry - their ad in a farming mag said "game fish" and pond supplies, but you might try Zetts Fish Farm & Hatcheries, PO Box 239, Drifting PA, 16834; the ad said to write for complete catalog.
Besides they might have info you could use seeing you both are in PA....
