Why shoot the crows?

I am only 'wondering'...?

In Missouri there is an open season on crows from Nov.something thru March 3rd. No limits at all on how many you kill or how you do it. They are the only species (besides furbearers) that you are allowed to use an electronic call on.

Today I watched someone set up a call and bring in all the crows in the area and proceed to shoot them from the sky. It was pretty easy pickings with that electronic call running.

No judgement from me, but how come? There's no cornfields...

What is wrong with crows?

Once they find a row of seed you've planted, they'll go right down the row plucking them out & eating. Any they miss at planting time they'll get once they sprout & get about an inch high. Terribly destructive creatures.

Yeah, it wasn't a kid out there target practicing either. I had to go reasearching to find the laws about hunting crows, cuz I really didnt know about it.

I have seen farmers keep them out of their newly seeded fields, etc...but never seen this before. The electronic sounds he was playing were pretty convincing to the crows.

I also think crows are cool. They have a distinctive family group.
They also rat out the bad boys in the woods.
It's very interesting to read about them and then watch there behaviour.

Then again.. some people just like to kill for the sake of killing.

Whats wrong with crows?

Well, on the the coast here, just go to the Grocery store and get a bunch of groceries and put it in the back of your pickup for about 10 minutes. You have just ended up with a big mess and no groceries.

Fishermen have lost lots of food due to crows. They have to make trips to their boats and when they get back the crows have taken over.

My BIL got 62 crows last year. He also got a ticket when he got one out of season.

The crows are pretty handy around here. They keep the hawks away from the chicken pen and let us know when anything unusual is going on in the woods.

AS I understand it they will also feed on the eggs and chicks of songbirds and game birds.

JJ Grandits, thank you. An answer that makes some sense to me. Although they are a Native Species...I guess that is why you only get part of the year to shoot as many as you can and any way you can. HMMM.

Crows are destructive to smaller birds and crops. They live in large groups that gather in the fall and disperse in the spring.

They will eat baby chicks (fowl and wild) and destroy a field of crops faster than deer or 'coons. They also steal shiny items from around the farm.

They also feed on my chickens eggs. That's why I shoot them. Or maybe they're grackles.

Funny that you can shoot and kill them but you can't legally take one as a pet. I'd love to have a pet crow.

wish I could here

Can't shoot them here................wish I could! They harass my chicks, ducklings. Until the littles ones are 1/2 grown. I have to keep them protected as the crows will fly down grab one and then fly up and drop the poor thing. Then they will eat them. They have worked in a pair to distract Mama Hen while she is protecting her chicks from one crow another will go behind her and take a chick! They also have chased the small songbirds out. They steal my walnuts in the fall. They fly up on the lightpole outside the back door and drop walnuts to the ground to crack them open...........then they squack at me if I dare to go out the back door! Smart birds but I don't like them. Wish my resident sparrow hawk was a bit bigger maybe he could help thin them out!

I've had them come and steal baby chicks and eat them. Here they also carry West Nile.

Crows in birdbath

I was watching the crows in the birdbath every morning for a few days. I went out to freshen the water and found a head of a redbird, and a piece of bread in the water. I flushed the birdbath dry, and left it dry for a few days. The crows got the message, and haven't been back.

The reason they have a season is they are protected under a "migratory bird" treaty with Mexico and Canada. The Federal Govt sets the number of days allowed, and the states can arrange their seasons however they want. They are considered a "non-game animal"
