keeping coyotes out

I am new to livestock so thanks for any help. We have a small calf and goats. Will a farm fence/hog wire keep coyotes and neighbors dogs out?

No. Depends on how close your neighbor dogs are to you. Its been suggested on here before you need to have a dog and allot it to spread its (pee) scent around the farm.

And even then, it's no guarantee.

We have five dogs who have the run of the place. Our nearest neighbor is three miles away as the crow flies, so our dogs are allowed to wander at will.
I still had a coyote in the front yard a few months ago.

With animals small enough not to be able to defend themselves, I would highly recommend a barn at night.

LGD's Livestock Guardian Dogs. Most farm fences are not even an inconvenience to coyotes or even semi-determined stray dogs. Putting your animals up at night keeps them safe at night. But what about when you go into town during the day? I turn my place over to my 2 Great Pyrenees dogs. Unless the problem requires thumbs, they handle it. Night or day, 24/7/365. They even invite the coyotes over to play...Heh, Heh, Heh.

LGD's are the best protection you can have:

Like has already been stated. One or more big dogs are your best defense but it's not fool proof. Coyotes are extrememly bold and typically will eat any animal they can drag off.

A few days ago, not far from here, a rabid fox attacked a young girl who was waiting on the school bus. Check out the news article below

I must live near you, if you're in SC AND a UGA fan

We have tons of coyotes here too and they're brave.

Our 2 Great Pyrenees keep them away though. Before the GP's, DH would get out of bed frequently to go run them off with his shotgun...they would be CLOSE to the house from the sound of it. Now we only hear them a few times a year and as soon as our dogs let them know they're here, the coyotes find somewhere else to go.

Too bad for the mean neighbor who shot our other GP though...now the coyotes just go over to his pasture and get his cows, now that our GP's are not protecting them any more

We have 2 house dogs but they run the property when we are outside, we also have rabbits(outside in hutches)next to the barn & goats. We have had coyotes as close as 20 feet last summer. They are very clever animals & usually only come in at night. We lput our goats in the barn at night now. A couple men have been using dogs & hunting the coyotes around here the last couple months & have got quite a few already.
