Disability, age, and physical work
Background to this story, at age 46 I discovered that my hip was going to need replacing. Had it done at age 48. Serious problems with a poor surgeon (who knew?), left me with nerve damage below the knee and a very long recovery (2 years+). Last fall (at 50) I had a hernia repaired and spent 8 weeks lifting no more than 10 pounds. Combined the 2 have really messed with my ability to get things done around here.
6 weeks ago I joined a gym and hired a personal trainer. Told him I wanted to gain back what I have lost but acknowledge that the feeling won't be coming back to the leg. I train with him one night a week and then go 2 more nights a week by myself.
Have to admit that the hay bales are getting lighter, the feed sacks are easier to move, and my pants are getting too loose. Always said gyms were a waste of time and money and I got plenty of exercise here on the farm. But his knowledge and knowing what muscles to work has made a difference in my abilities! Can't see doing this year round, but will definitely do it in the winters to stay in shape. Expensive but worth it.
