We have a home!
We made an offer on a house in Michigan yesterday and it was accepted.
It is the perfect place for me - 15 miles too far from work for DH's comfort, but then it is 16 miles from work. It was the best place we found after several trips and days of looking. We are very, very happy with it.
I have been on this forum for a couple years. I have read all your posts of your acreages and how you are arranging your homesteads with much interest. I always thought I would have my little acre here to keep me busy and I would just do the best I could. Now a new world has opened up to me. We will have 7 acres, a horse barn (complete with stalls, each with water and electricity); and a nicely fenced riding arena. We aren't into horses, but thanks to a lot of ideas here, I can adapt what is available to what we think we want to do. I just can't decide which - milk cow, goats, sheep, steer, pig?
1/2 of the land is in pasture and 1/2 in hay. Only downer is there any woods to speak of. The pasture and hay field are fenced with 3 strands of elec. The fields haven't been cared for in a couple of years, so I will have a lot of learning to do to get them up to par. We will be within five miles of any kind of fruit orchard that we could ever want to eat except citrus. We will be near a very small town that looks like it is well cared for. There is a local, non-chain grocery and lumber store. We hope to establish a good relationship with each of them so we can support these home businesses.
This is very exciting for us. Even if DH isn't the farmer, he likes us to provide for ourselves. Get ready for lots and lots of questions!

Congratulations!!! That sounds wonderful and why pick between animals when you have that much room, fenced pasture, AND a barn with lights and water? Sounds like you could have this AND That AND some of these...

Oh, I'm sooo excited for you! Wow-what a neat sounding piece of land. Plant trees YESTERDAY! LOL...find out which ones grow fast in your area that are strong. I've heard shantung maple is good but for here in TX.
After all your hard looking & disappointments-you deserve a great place! Happy dreaming!

No ready-made garden area, but I pretty much have my pick of the spots. the only issue is HOW BIG! We will also add an orchard, berries and asparagus patch. I think I am going to use the riding arena as a starting place for the garden - it is already fenced, just needs the wire on it. Maybe I will square out the oval ends!
