Water pressure regulator noise

Public water supply

Inline pressure regulator occasionally makes noise. This happens without any water running at all. Haven't noticed any fluctuation in pressure. Is this the first sign that I need a new regulator?

Beeman pressure reg valves, AKA, pressure reducing valve (PRV) are spring loaded. The sound could be from the service pressure changing causing the spring to extend or compress. But any "sound" from the unit would concern me. If the unit goes bad you may have an unexpected high pressure on your water lines that could cause damage to your water line. You might want to get a pressure gage to check the pressure on your water lines downstream of the PRV. You should be able to get one from a hardware store for about $10.00 that will screw on to a hose bibb. (No plumbing required, just screw it on to where the garden hose screws on.) If you can locate a place to put a gage on upstream of the PRV get two pressure gages and you can see the amount of PSI the PRV is reducing the pressure. Don't be surprised to see the pressure vary, especially if you're in an area where there's a lot of water use. Hope this helps - Good Luck

Didn't you loose water pressure during the Ice storm? If you did what you are hearing is the pressure on the unregulated side fluctuating or trash in the regulator. IF it doesn't stop in a few days you may need a new one. Check your pressure and see if it is changing a lot.

Didn't have a pressure regulator for quite a few years, installed when straightening out plumbing about 5 years ago. Never had high pressure from the utility. I do have a gauge and will check as I suspect fluctuation from them as the cause more then anything else.

We never had any ice or any outages here, all of that stayed just north in KY.

I live in a rental house in college that made a high pitched whine all the time, after living with this for 6 months I finally decided to mess with it. I adjusted it 1/4 to a 1/2 turn with no clue what it actually did to the water presssure, all I cared about is that the sound stopped!
