We are doing good, schools decided to be in session today, but not run the bus routes because the back roads are still bad, put alot of folks in a bind, my son had to stay home, unexcused, because hubby had to have the 4-wheel drive to go to work this morning. My internet is screwy though, up down up down more down than up, making it hard to do my school work
but all my animals are here, even got new buns

Our local area here in south central Ky caught a bit of ice but not too bad. Some of the counties around us are still without power, several counties water systems are down, so there are "boil water" advisories. several school closing last week, but mostly every one is ok in our area. It sure was pretty out though, looked kinda like a glass factory had exploded leaving everything all shiney and bright.

The first thing I did was to get the camera and try to capture the spectacular beauty of the ice. No earthly painter could paint a landscape like this.

We are pretty new to our place so we weren't as prepared as we wanted but we were prepared way more than most people. Our utility provider had 4,400 wire breakages that affected 96,000 homes. Compounding this was the roads were next to impassable until Sunday. We were out of electric for four and a half days. The water pump, lights, and furnace, didn't work but we didn't suffer for a thing. In fact I told my wife that I enjoyed living like this.

Things have melted out here (McCracken, Graves, Livingston, Crittenden, Calloway, Marshal county area in KY) but the power companies have a massive problem on their hands. Hundreds of poles are busted. Power lines are down everywhere. Lots of trees down and roofs are damaged from both them and the ice load. Paducah is coming back online slowly so the stores are at least open part of the time to buy supplies. The adjacent counties, however, are still mostly without power and many are without water as well. In some of the counties they are advising that if people "can't take care of their basic needs" they should evacuate to the south (at least to Nashville) because in many cases it is going to be weeks before they are back online. We are in good shape in comparison to many. We have wood heat, kerosene lamps and even a small (very small) generator to intermittently power the fridge and charge computer (laptop) and cell phone batteries. We also had a few cans of gas and two cycle oil so we were covered from the beginning. Others were not as fortunate. There was no place to buy what was needed even if you could have gotten out of your house to do so. Our cell phone has worked through it all although most lost both cell phones and land lines. Because I used my cell phone for my Internet connection I have managed to get online occasionally as well.

I was without electric for almost 4 days and lost most of what I had stored in the freezer. I had a back up heat source so at least I was able to keep my kitchen and bathroom areas warm. The bedroom was a bit nippy! A generator is on my wish list.

It was a relatively quiet morning here.....only 3 people came by to shower. I came through pretty well with wood heat, gas range & water heater and generator for lights/TV. Many of my neighbors however will be without power and/or water for another 10 days to 2 weeks at the best.

Went up to my place Saturday. Trees covered in ice are beautiful but deadly. I lost a lot of tops of the trees in the pasture. Luckily nothing froze but the electric is suppose to be out for 2 more weeks. Unfortunately I am at the end of the power lines so not big priority for the electric company. They are working their way to me. Lots and lots of snapped power poles and trees. Most of the roads were cleared of branches except in a few spots where you had to go over on the other side of the road because branches were down. Looks like a heat wave for Saturday and Sunday however Tues. and Wed depending on how bad it gets may just get hit again.

We were without power for 116 hours. That was more than enough for me! There are still many here in Ozark County without power. The surrounding schools have been closed since Tuesday afternoon and through tomorrow (Tuesday).

A generator and plenty of gas kept the freezers and refrigerators cold and a wood burning stove kept us warm and cooked our meals. (We can't figure out why the orginal owner would build a house 20 miles from town with an electric stove.) We used a propane fired turkey cooking device (that a neighbor loaned us) to make percolator coffee. We filled everything with water before the storm hit, so we had water for a while, and used old oil lamps and candles for evening light.

We have a dial telephone, so we called the neighbors to check on them.

We did well, because we had heat, water, and food. We would have be in trouble if we didn't have dry firewood (everything outside was covered with ice), so a vented propane space heater is on the wish list.

We put a Hardy boiler in about three weeks ago but it doesn't function without electric. Our Fischer wood stove was on a cart on the deck waiting for my sons to help move it. When we noticed at 4:00 a.m. the power was out I rolled it in and hooked it back up. We only lost 2 degrees of heat in the house during the move. At 6:30 we had breakfast of eggs, sausage, and biscuts, fixed on the Fischer stove. I then took the cart and moved our freezer out onto the deck where it kept everything frozen. We had plenty of bottled water but I collected, over the four and a half days, over 700 lbs of icycles to melt for flushing and for baths. We kept two aluminum wash pans full of icycles in the refrigerator to keep thing cool in there and when the ice melted we poured it into buckets for secondary use.

We had been planning to install a 17kw whole house backup generator but this experience showed me that we don't need anything near that size. My wife and I enjoyed the power outage and didn't suffer for a thing.

I just got power at 630 today. 6 days without power. Four Duce is in Harrison and they may not have power yet. I haven't been able to call him yet but will try later tonight.

We are alive no power for 7 days now only have a few minutes on the puter borrowed genirator . will give a full report when powers back up hang in there. lessons learned . Do NOt Count ON the Goverment In a Crisis .

Had no problems here in the city. We lost power for about 12 hrs on Wednesday and then it came back on....we have wood heat and city water so we are good for days without power.
My neighbor is a city health inspector and as of last night they still had 20,000 in shelters because they still do not have heat at home...That is just in lexington.
Overall in this area it was a pretty weak ice storm, knocked a few limbs down, phone and power lines here an there. I have heard that western parts of the state had it a lot worse.

Our power was out for 6 days but we did ok. Lots of trees down in the yard so we will have some good firewood.
It sure was beautiful and when it warmed up and started melting the ice falling from the trees made a tinkling noise. Kind of like glass falling. That was nice.
All the neighbors really checked on each other and helped out.
But I'm glad it didn't go on one minute longer!!!

We are alive so far here but got some friends over in KY doesn't have no power as of yet. Got one friend that lost power for a while long with the power surge killed his computer.

We are under Winter Storm Watch in effect from Tuesday afternoon through late Wednesday night for here. They are giving up to 6 inches. We already had a small snow today which measured in at around 3 inches an tonight the snow that melted is all black ice. The police is around here are hitting ditches or going sideways trying to people that calls for help.
