Stovepipe Fire/ Coal Stove Questions...

We had the dreaded stove pipe on fire scenario last night. Not really very much fun.Wasn't expecting it to happen as we've burned really hot at least once daily. Check pipe and clean often. Now I'm wondering if those waxy fire starters could have been the problem. I have used them a lot this past week. Had to use one of those Chemfex sticks to put it out. We only burn hardwoods, almost all white oak, some apple and ash.
Now for the stupid question...........

I was wondering if coal stoves have buildup problems in the pipe? Is there anything in coal that leaves a flammable buildup? We have been thinking about buying a coal stove because coal is cheap here. ($30.00 a ton delivered) My hubby works nights and I'm all for burning whatever is safest! Even tho we live in WV we've never burned coal.
