Vermont Castings Catalyic question

I have a Defiant/Encore model 2140 stove that really needs a new catalytic combustor. The local dealer (Antelope Valley Ca.) wants almost $400.00 for one(what a rip). I was wondering if anyone has used any of the combuster replacements that are out on the internet. Ceramics types for about $200 and a steel honeycomb for $250 there is a wire mesh type for about $150. They all say that they are EPA certified. Any ideas.

I have not replaced the one in my Consolidated Dutchwest but I think Lehman's sells them. Actually, we seldom ever use ours like that because it is so hot and my house is small. I can't stand a lot of heat so we just build a fire and don't put it on the combuster.

We heat with the stove 24/4 with a day off to get the ash out. I have to get on the roof to clean the pipe once a month. They say the combuster will keep the pipe cleaner much longer. I do not like to get on the roof, so that alone will be nice.
