Rooftop sewer vent frost buildup

The only kind of 'cap' that I've seen around here, to help reduce frost buildup, is a black plastic kind. Because of the holes in them some people call them a 'birdhouse'. Thing is, the top part is made kinda cheap and the plastic breaks easy when you're trying to knock out the frost.
Probably the best advice I've heard is to insulate the pipe in the attic space; then maybe the cap wouldn't even be needed.
But if a cap is needed, are there more than one kind available? Anyone find one that's better than the others? Any other suggestions? Thanks.
