Stone House - The Pit

Haven't tackled the Pit yet. No I'm talking about the Money Pit. Well maybe it will be. I'm talking about the pit in our Floor where the fire started. There is a big hole and it's filled with junk. Anyone got a backhoe?

Sure glad it's you gonna have to deal with that mess and not me. Replacing damaged joists is beyond my skill level.

How deep is the pit? That hole is smaller than I thought it would be. Your hubby sounds like a very handy fellow, and capable of replacing the joist and flooring. There are step by step instructions here: http://www.blackanddecker.com/Projec...947_24009.html

Once this is done, the house will seem more complete, and certainly be safer. Hopefully, it will hold warmth better too!

Hey, says on yer blog you are cleaning it out by hand. Why not put up a swingset-like structure made of 2x4s and use a pulley or block and tackle to lower a large pallet, bucket or wheelbarrow pan down there? Load it and hoist it up. If you get a cheapo H-F electric winch, it could rise at the flip of a switch. Might be easier, not too costly to do.
